Are there any teachers on here that left FCPS to work in Arlington? Is the grass greener? I am considering applying over the upcoming winter break. |
The districts in NOVA has a reciprocal “do not hire after x date” agreement. They may bend due to the extraordinary shortages but don’t be surprised if you don’t get a call |
NP and I assume OP meant applying for next year. Why do you want to leave FCPS? I’m thinking about applying there in the new year for 22-23. Yes, maybe the grass is greener for both of us. |
Wow. Are they aware of antitrust laws!? |
do anti trust laws apply to government entities? |
I think the date is May 1, so you have plenty of time OP. APS pays better. It isn’t just the grass that is greener! Don’t underestimate how much a long commute can suck the joy out of your life, though. If you live out in Fairfax, you may be happier staying with FCPS. |
Discovery ES in APS just had to hire 2 5th grade teachers and they found them from out of country! |
APS pays more than any district in the DMV. |
NOt DCPS for sure and I don't even think Alexandria - your step system is confusing to understand so not sure. |
APS teacher here. About 1/4 of our building staff came to us from FCPS at some point, and all stayed. Never heard of the opposite scenario. |
I was previously in APS and am currently in FCPS. APS has its share of issues, but FCPS has not been my cup of tea. I think some of it is personal preference on bigger vs. smaller district and some of it is specific to the school. Some of it is probably just that teaching is a bit of a disaster everywhere and it is wishful thinking that a change of scenery will actually make a difference in my job satisfaction. Regardless, I’ll be using winter break to update my resume and applying to return to APS. |
APS pays the most out of any school system in Virginia, however their starting salaries may not be the highest (I'm not sure on that one). They really reward longevity with the system. |
Wow, so you think the 10th largest school system in the country and the surrounding districts have no lawyers and just make up hiring rules as they go? Get a clue. It’s very legal. You cannot break your contract in one district to take a parallel job in another. A promotion? Sure, that’s fine. But moving from one teaching position to another in the middle of the year will not fly. |
10 years - masters plus 30 looks to be exactly the same as what I make in Alexandria and that’s after missing 2 steps different years (which I know you guys have) so Alexandria is at least the same if not more. |
I think this used to be true but isn't any longer. They have a compensation working group going on now in the hopes that they can streamline the scale and reinstate steps. A couple APS teachers made some spreadsheets comparing salaries at various career points. I think LCPS was actually the leader in many categories. |
