| My student is considering taking Honors Chemistry in summer school as an option to fit in an additional upper level science class during the school year. If anyone on this board has experience with Honors Chemistry in summer school and can comment on the level of difficulty, time commitment, etc. I would appreciate hearing it. I am not on board with this idea yet. Thanks in advance! |
| You'll need to check what courses are offered. I'm not even sure Honors Chem is one. (Maybe regular chem?) |
| If your child is planning on upper level science, I would not skip full year Honors Chemistry. They will miss all of the laboratory work. |
+1. DC did it last summer and regrets doing it that way. |
+1 This. Unless DC is a science genius wanting to go straight to AP Chem but has Honors Chemistry as a prerequisite they don’t really need to succeed. |
| OP here, thanks for the responses. Do they simulate the labs electronically or skip them altogether? |
| No idea about summer school but Honors Chemistry isn't hard generally. My kid currently has 100% in honors chemistry (but a C in AP physics 1). |
|
What about this an option for a kid who has no interest in science but wants to satisfy the grad requirement and make room
for more electives during the school year? |
Pp notwithstanding, a lot of kids struggle with Honors Chem. That and Honors Algebra 2. Summer school is fast-paced and tough for almost any class. I’d do it again for health but I wouldn’t want my kid to do it for most core academic classes. Maybe Geometry or English. |
Is it even allowed? |
+2 The compressed schedule is tough, even for the lighter classes. |
| No doubt it would be hard but anyone know if it would allowed? |
It's offered, so of course it's allowed. |
Some courses aren’t eligible for initial credit, only available in the summer as retakes. |
