This is clearly a breakdown of the royal marriage and the royal family is making the situation worse exactly how they did with Charles/Diana. They never learn.

Plus, the palace announced that the King of England has cancer. If they can announce that the head of the royal family (a more prominent and important figure than Kate) has cancer (seemingly a more serious issue than Kate's, as they stated "not cancer related") then why would they have issues stating the reasons for Kate's surgery? They already put out a far more shocking and impactful statement re: Charles.
It's 100% marital - particularly since Kate seems to be in camp with HER family. Going to stay with her mom and dad for an extended period of time while well enough to go out driving in full hair and makeup is not a serious ailment that she's recovering from . That's a separation.

Full hair and makeup? That is a stretch, it was a blurry long range photo. Maybe she personally doesn't want to share details. People are curious and as a woman medical privacy especially around scars or damage is very critical. I had surgery and didn't wear anything but clothing that would cover my scar until it was fully healed. I just didn't want the prying eyes out and about. I did do my hair and makeup usually too. I just wanted to look my "best" and not "hurt".

You are not the future Queen consort. While I understand it must've been rough, you had zero duty to the public. Kate has been MIA since Christmas. That is a long freaking time in the life of a very public royal. If she was well enough to drive around with her mother with makeup on and hair, she was seemingly well enough for a brief, simple photo op for the public. I mean, she had full hair and makeup (and walking) almost immediately following birth.
Kate has fled the marriage and trying to jockey for best possible terms. If the palace can announce that the king has cancer, they could've said something - anything - re: Kate.

This. What would be the US equivalent to the Royal Family? Imagine if one of those people went missing since Christmas! and then posted an ambiguous and heavily edited picture and said, “I’m good! All is good here!”

Huh? The Royal Family was not born yesterday. They have gone through decades of scandals with the modern press. They are not new to this circus and they have professionals in place for exactly this issue - media circus. There is ZERO CHANCE that they did not anticipate the frenzy that would follow, or they would've quashed it. They clearly CANNOT because Kate is not going to cooperate. If she was well enough to sit in her mother's car and be photographed, she could've sat in an armchair in her home, on the patio or nearly any other place at Kensington for a 5-10 minute photo. She is not at the palace, though, and is instead with her mother.

I’m not even convinced there was a medical issue. This could be the Royal Family equivalent to calling in sick to work when you aren’t really sick and you just need the day off for something else.

I don’t know what to think now. It’s possible she’s on steroids and has ballooned, and is embarrassed or not ready to reveal herself. That’s fine, but then don’t post a clearly, and badly, edited photo.

It’s possible she has a colostomy bag and wants privacy. That’s also fine, but so much more easily hidden under a dress, flowing top, spring jacket, etc.

If she can’t stand, a current photo could have been taken in a chair, on a couch, etc, rather quickly. Louis would be expected to flub the picture and the other two children have always been cooperative for the camera. Nothing surprising here.

The bottom line is SOMETHING is amiss.

She either looks like crap, can’t stand, or has an embarrassing implement related to her recovery.

Or maybe they are getting a divorce and their PR team just sucks.

It’s not just the Kate aspect that’s weird. It’s William and the palaces behavior.

In past crises, when William and Kate have been out at event they are smiling and thanking well wishers. It’s all “thank you so much, so-and-so is on the mend and the family will be fine.” William has been tight lipped here. Canceling appearances. Issuing statements with his crest alone. Not pictured with his kids or father. The palace is denying things -with terrible excuses- that they would never acknowledge in the past.

The royal family is in crisis. There is something deeply wrong with William and Kate’s relationship and possibly impacting relationships further into the royal family. I don’t know exactly what, but W & K’s estrangement seems like only the tip of the iceberg.

All of this. What the people who are mad about this speculation don't understand is that many of us are not upset about Kate being out of the public eye, whether she's taking time to recover or just needed a break. I don't even care what her medical issue is! She's entitled to sick leave or R&R or whatever, and her actual "job" is to be a mother, essentially, so I don't really think it's that important that she's not going to events.

The issue is the behavior of William and the palace is weird, erratic, totally inconsistent with the past, and is making Kate's absence seem like it's a big deal.

When they first announced her surgery and recovery, my only thought was "oh I wish her the best, I hope she recovers well." I don't even care about the royals really, but I'm a mom in my 40s who has had a serious health issue and it's hard and I just felt empathetic.

And I still feel empathetic towards Kate, who I do think must be going through some kind of medical issue. But the palace's and William's behavior during her absence has been SO WEIRD that I also think something else is going on because if this was genuinely just about her recuperating from a planned surgery and nothing more, they would have had a straightforward PR plan for it and followed it and the only people who would be speculating are fringe crazies on social media. At this point a lot of us who are normal, non-conspiracy theorists are looking at this going "wtf is going on?"

Kate is not the issue. Something is amiss with Kensington Palace.

Plus it would have been a great way to show your kids the power of being honest

But bigger forces must be at play, and Kate can’t control the narrative like she could if it was strictly a health issue

She has edited pictures before. And she has taken what become official photos before, too. She's been a hobby photographer for years, not sure why you think she wouldn't be familiar with using editing tools. This wasn't a great editing job - but there are plenty of professional or official photos that are badly edited.

The part I don't understand is the reaction from AP, Getty, etc. That's the strange part.

Because it's not a real photo it's a mishmash of other photos edited to look recent

Genuine question: other than this photo mishap and William's failure to attend the funeral, what behavior is so weird? They said she would only reappear in public after easter.
