We have a trash can in a pull out cabinet in the kitchen. 1.5 yr old Labrador yesterday opened the trash and ate all the thanksgiving leftovers that we had thrown out. Sigh.
Can someone recommend a child lock that’s easy to unlock? Something simple would keep the dog out, and I want something that can be undone with one hand because you need to open the trash all the fricking time!! |
| My BIL is a genius and installed magnets made for this purpose for his under-drawer trash can. Neither dog can use their snout to open. That said, I know labs are pretty strong. |
^^ it's a pull out trash can |

My pull-out trash can came with magnets to close it, but they're not strong enough and it opens by itself. I've been thinking of changing them out myself. Perhaps if OP chooses really strong one, her lab won't be able to open it? Dogs don't have the same prehensile fingers, so it might work, combined with training. |
| Wait, you just threw out Thanksgiving leftovers yesterday? |
This is what my genius dad did. He’s been gone for years now, but my dog still knows if she doesn’t hear the magnets click to go and open the garbage cabinet. |
That was my first thought too. I bet the dog will get really sick. |
We have a pull out trash can too. There’s one that hangs down from the stationary cabinet and one that is on the back of the cabinet panel that pulls out. |
Op here. Dog did not get sick! Slightly loose stools on day 2 but that was it. I wrote this post a few days after this all happened. The magnets are a good idea, I’m going to give that a try. My lab is very strong, but hopefully if it’s just hard enough to open he will stop trying. Ok, after writing that out and knowing my dog, I no longer think it will work.
