Whole house water filter

Anonymous
Does anyone have a whole house water filter? I am so sick of the build up of crap from the DC water. I find we have to replace our facuet head on our sink ever few years and I am constantly picking it out from around the shower head. I know there are different levels of filtration etc., but if you have done so would you do it again? How much did it cost?

TIA!

Filter or softener?

If you're getting lime deposits (the white minerals), you'll want a softener.

Yes, we have an EWS Spectrum and it was about $8K. It will last 10 years and then the filter needs to be replaced. It's amazing. You need to get your water tested to see what the exact issues are and then have an experienced plumber install it. Our plumber didn't know what he was doing and we had to get it fixed a year later but all is fine now.

You may also want to look into Culligan systems.

Good advice only if you have upwards of $8,000 to spend on decades old technology that shouldn't cost more than $1000 and the cost of a plumber for a few hours. All you need is a water softener which utilizes ion exchange resin to remove the minerals and a brine tank that holds the salt and salt-water solution used to clean the resin bed automatically when the metered valve calls for it. You want a 48,000 grain tank, with a metered, Clack valve. That is the best system in the industry and can be had for about $750 plus installation. You could also get a cartridge pre-filter to remove the chlorine from your water using activated carbon, or a tank of the same for just a little more. That's it.

Or....pay some sales guy well over $1,000 to sell you some outdated Culligan system or a "saltless" EWS system that does not work. There are no systems that remove all the hardness from you water that do not use salt. There just isn't. I'm sorry you were sold on that nonsense and you have to spend $8,000 + to replace it in 10 years??

Here is a random site I pulled up to show you the system. I'm sure you can find this locally at any plumbing supply store, or just ask your plumber what it costs for him to sell it to you, installed
https://internationalfilter.com/clack-residential-48000-grain-water-softener/

Same thing, $699 This is far better than what you will get from one of the water treatment sales organizations for many thousands more.

So, you buy the system, like the ones you link to above, and a plumber can install it easily?

Also, in DC is lime the big issue? Just want to know what I am dealing with.

Also part 2, will this take the "DC taste" out of our water so that we wouldn't need a brita?

You don't need a whole house filter for drinking water. An under sink filter is all you need.

Have you had your water tested?

If not test it with a company like Tap Score,

https://mytapscore.com/

they will tell you what is in your water and make recommendations on what type of filter you should get depending on what is in your water.

Um, ok. I'm happy with my water filtration system. It's not just about water hardness. It's about removing chloramine & chlorine (the chemical DC water uses to sanitize the water) and VOCs, pesticides, etc with activated carbon. And I don't have to replace the entire system in ten years, just the filter carbon media.

A cartridge pre-filter with activated carbon has to be changed every three to six months, so I'm not buying that it's easier or cheaper.

I am the OP of the EWS post. I do need a whole house filter because my skin reacts to DC water and I was using a stop gap shower head that needed to be changed every three months. Added bonus of the whole house filter is that it also protects appliances from hard scale build up. It's pretty great to be able to drink out of every faucet in my house, too. It's a big purchase, and of course, your mileage will vary depending on your needs and requirements.

Or, I'll just tell you. Your municipal DC water. Is filtered, highly chlorinated Potomac river water. It's about 10 grains of hardness and 2 ppm chlorine.

Not if you get a big one. Or better yet, a tank with a cubic foot of activated carbon will also last over ten years. But the OP is also talking about minerals in the water. That EWS system doesn't remove the minerals at all. It's a total scam.

For sure, a carbon tank that removes the chlorine, should be a part of any system in your home. And again, it's not high tech. The technology hasn't changed a bit in decades.

Yes, but ask the plber first. They should be able to order the same thing from their supplier.

The taste is mostly from chlorine. Get a tank of activated carbon for that. Goes before the softener.

What about an under sink reverse osmosis filter? You don’t drink the water from every tap right?
