Canadian relative's kid is currently a junior and is being courted by some Canadian colleges for football. His dream is the NFL, though, so he wants to get into an American college/university.
(As the American relative with high school kids, I was asked for advice.) However; I don't really know because my kids are not athletic recruits. I'd like to give this kid some advice on where to start. Can anyone help me with this one? |

I would assume it would be the same way as American kids do - he should contact college coaches and send video, as well as look into visa programs.
International students come to the US all the time. Most college websites have specific info on how to apply as an international student. |
| same as US kids. call/send videos. PP is right |
| If they dream of the NFL, and it's a realistic dream, they need to play for a program that will be scouted by top DI colleges. That's were the vast majority of NFL players come from. Michigan and Wisconsin aren't giving scholarships based on videos sent in by parents. It looks like the highest rated international prospects are 3 stars https://247sports.com/Season/2021-Football/CompositeRecruitRankings/?InstitutionGroup=Highschool&State=Int |
| Earlier poster here - I was also figuring, that since kid was being recruited in Canada (and focused on the nfl) he would already have a recruiting profile and that is the “video” he would send to coaches. |
Penn State has I think 5 Canadians on its roster; many are starters. The backup QB played at Bullis for a year or two. Perhaps as US private can get one on the radar. |
| If your dream is the NFL, there's a whole different set of rules compared to even your average recruit. |
Almost all of the Canadian prospects played for the same prep program there (Clarkson). |
| OP here--thank you! I'll check back to see if I get any more replies. I've forwarded this link to my relative. |
| You asked about football, but a lot of Canadian lax players come down to US Colleges to play. All of the top programs have guys from Canada. In addition to normal Lax, they play Box Lax in the winter up there and I guess it makes them sought after. |
