Fellow Moms and dads, what do you do when you are at a food establishment and it’s an older lady who is practically shouting back the order to you at the counter or shows signs of frustration. I’ve now encountered this a few times. I just don’t know how to handle it in the moment.
Thanks! |
| You be patient. There may be background noise or she has hearing issues. |

Where are you that the counter lady is shouting to the kitchen your order? 1950 Jukebox Diner?
Is there truly no keypad or screen where the person enters your order? |
| It mean you are not talking loudly enough for her to hear. Speak up more. It drives me crazy when people do not understand the social cue of speaking more loudly when you need the other person in front of you to talk louder. |
| If these are not all the same employees, the common denominator is you. Talk louder and slower. Have your order ready to go and say it clearly. |
| Especially if you are wearing a mask at the time, it’s likely she simply cannot hear you, especially if she is older and/or it’s a noisy kitchen environment. |
| My husband is a little hard of hearing in his early fifties. All the masking really brought home to him how reliant he had become on partial lip reading to determine what people are saying. |

+1 OP, have you noticed that you are saying this has happened to YOU more than once by different people? That means the problem is YOU, sweetie, not the other people. Think about what YOU need to do to CHANGE how you're placing your order. |
Exactly. |
| I have some hearing loss in my 50s; you need to speak up OP. They are just trying to get your order right. |
| Hearing loss in my early 40s. It is so hard when you even tell people that you can't hear them and all they do is repeat, not speak louder. |
| what does ordering food at the counter mean? |
| With grace and patience. |
