I know this is a weird topic, haha. My adult dog used to be in a good habit of going #2 once a day on our evening walk - normal, solid poops. This is the only true walk he does every day, we take him on several other #1 breaks throughout the day and he is a very low energy breed. Lately he has gotten into the habit of pooping during his 9am pee outing. When he does this, his nighttime poops inevitably end up being close to liquid because he doesn't have any solid poop left over. When he skips the morning poop, nighttime poop is normal.
I'm totally anthropomorphizing here, but I feel like he thinks that he has to poop before bed and is forcing himself to poop again at night even when he doesn't really have to. Am I crazy? How do I fix this other than skipping the night walk if he poops in the morning? |

This is normal. They can only poop when they’re outside, we’ve trained them to poop on walks. My guy would poop on every walk even if he only squeezed a drop.
Please don’t skip the night walk! Why would you do this? What’s the problem? If you want the poops to be more solid, I would adjust his diet. If he currently eats twice a day, try adding lunch if you are home. You could also try a little pumpkin or yogurt. |
The problem is that he is forcing himself to poop when he doesn't need to! We already give him pumpkin with every meal. His poops are a normal consistency when he only goes once a day. |
| How do you know what’s going on with your dog’s digestive system? Give him his walks and let him do his thing. His pooping habits don’t have to please you as long as he’s not soiling the house. |
This is an extremely weird concern. |
| He might just need to express his anal glands. |
| Is he normal weight? Any parasites? |
| He sounds unwell, not "forcing himself" my god woman. |

I've had two little mixed male terriers who did this. They just got used to utilizing the opportunity and also, I think, to please. In fact, one dog, dying from hemangiosarcoma produced a poop on his very last day , almost nothing, because he was just used to doing it and despite being so sick still wanted to produce.
Broke my heart. |
| We had a dog like this. I don't really know that there's a way to solve it. |
Please tell us how he is forcing himself to poop? I don't get it. If he has to go than he poops. What is the big deal? |
| I don’t think forcing himself to poop would result in a runny poop. Seems to me he is having intermittent digestive problems and so does a second runny poop because he’s having a little issue. We had to start using expensive prescription high fiber food for our dog to get rid of the runny poops. Pumpkin was insufficient and doesn’t really have all that much fiber. |
| Maybe probiotics would help? |
