Jean sizing - has it changed a ton?

Anonymous
Not a humble brag - but seriously what gives? I am 5’7” and 142 and my jeans are a size 26/size 2-4 depending on the brand. The 2/4/6 sizes I can see have changed but the pure inches sized jeans how have they changed? And why? I don’t go into stores anymore and it’s sooo hard to find a pair of pants that fit correctly. FWIW I am in my late 30s and like more high waisted pants.

Not in high end brands in my experience. I’ve been wearing paige size 26 for ten years. I have vintage pairs that still fit the same as the new pairs of the same size.

The only thing I can think is if you’re a recent convert to high waist (because until five years ago there weren’t really any high waist options) maybe your waist is proportionately smaller than your hips.

I'm 5'9, 125lb, and I can't fit into a 26, or size 2. What the heck brand is this?

I wear AG and Madewell, mostly. Both are size 27.

Uh different bone structure and body shapes? I'm 5'4, 130lb and 26 or 27, and size 2. I have a really long torso, which is denser than, say, long legs, and probably accounts for 10-15 lbs relative to someone with a short torso of the same height.

Perhaps it is the different cut of jeans going in and out of style. While I agree with you that it is hard to find a pair of pants that fit correctly, I have not observed the extreme vanity sizing in jeans that you describe. fwiw I am 5'7 or 5'8 and 135 to 140 and wear size 31/size 10-12 pants and jeans.

Depends on the brand, their method of sizing, and your body type.

I’m 5’7”, 156 lbs, and wear an 8 jeans in most brands except Levis which has me in a 10 or 12 equivalent depending on the style and Madewell which has me in everything from 28-30. I have two friends very similar height and weight as me — one wears a 10 and the other a 12. We have different body types. I’m more “hourglass”. One friend is an “apple” shape and the other a “pear”. In photos we all look about the same size. Just wear what fits your body and ignore the size. I typically grab one size down, my typical 8/29, and one size up when I try on new items.

I’m 5’6” and 142 just like OP and I’m a solid 8 in most brands. Very occasionally a 6. I know everyone’s body shape is different but I cannot imagine how anyone this weight could fit into a 2 unless they were extraordinarily tall.

I’m 5’6” and 129-130. I’m between a 2 and 4. 27 in premium denim. Used to be a 25/26 when I was 115-120

I think the material of jeans have gone from more stuff to very stretchy which enables you to fit in smaller sizes depending on how you like to wear your jeans. I like them to fit more snug and I get the waist tailored.

Op here - I know that is why I am surprised. I am relatively fit if that changes anything. I am 142 but not very much stomach fat and run a lot. Legs are definitely strong

Yes, I think they have. I have a 28 (True Religion) from about 2004 that is fairly snug, but all mine now are 26 (Paige and Edwin mostly) and fit looser. I'm 5'9 and between 125-130 FWIW.

Material matters a lot, as well as the fit of the waist and the cut of the legs. I can wear a 24-26 depending on brand and specific jeans. Never thought I’d wear a 24 but found when I started buying high rise, straight leg jeans in a stretch fabric, I had to size down to ensure the right fit on my waist and butt (otherwise too baggy). Back when I wore exclusively skinny jeans, I would not have been able to get a size 24 over my hips.

I'm glad you said this. I'm usually a 26 but Levi's I'm a 27 or 28.

I’m 5’8” 155 wear size 12, when I was 145 I wore a 10.

White jeans always fit differently.

I'm 5'4" and 122 lbs and I absolutely cannot fit into a 2, but my weight is all in my hips.
