My college sophomore came home yesterday for Thanksgiving break. He has already had COVID, is fully vaxxed, and he took a COVID test over the weekend -- negative.
But, he has a very mucousy cough. He said he and all his housemates got colds about a week ago, and he feels fine, just has the lingering cough. Last summer, he got busted for vaping. I am pretty sure this is contributing to his COVID + cold + cough. What would you say? |
| Check his college housing for mold. |
| Fair point. |
|
I smoked for 30 years and don't have the symptoms you describe.
|
| Maybe. We are all sick as dogs with a bad cold and none of us vape. |
| Yes, I recall reading early on that vaping makes you more susceptible to covid. |
So did my mom. At 75, she’s on oxygen with lungs filled with emphysema. |
Have him seen for pneumonia. |

My HS senior brought home a cold 2 weeks ago, he felt a lot better after a weekend of rest. Younger brother got it 2 days after that and recovered even more quickly. I finally came down with it 2 days after the youngest and am still blowing my nose multiple times a day, have a phlegmy cough, and feel like crap by about 7pm each day. I don’t vape. I’m keeping a close eye to make sure I don’t get a sinus infection and/or respiratory infection.
The COVID or vaping could be making this worse or he could just have the crud. |

Your kid is probably just lingering sick. I also have a college sophmore who has been sick (they all have), and also started vaping.
My totally less than ideal method re: the vaping, which worries me (and I used to smoke cigarettes, so I get it), was to monetarily bribe him to to quit by the end of the school year. Bonus cash if he quits by the end of the semester. I think it's working. He also made side bets with friends to help hold himself accountable to quitting. |
| Flu a has been going around college campuses and it’s very mucousy. I know because my Dd gave it to me lol |
Tell us more. I’m considering this for weed vaping. |
It was pretty straight forward. We're talking nicotine here (with the cigs back in the day we were at least able to look in the package and know how many we were smoking). He smokes weed occasionally, but doesn't vape it - flower only. I picked this particular battle after expressing my concerns. "I will give you $X if you quit vaping by the end of the year. Quit by the end of the semester, and it's $X +$Y." Explained that for me this was a significant chunk of change and it mattered that much. It helps that he wasn't thrilled with himself for gaining a nicotine addiction. |
| I smoke cigarettes and pot, I have stage 4 COPD, and I feel just fine. And your college sophomore is an adult. My 18 yr old came to visit and she vapes and smokes pot. She is in perfect health, works with the public, is not vaccinated, and it would never occur to me to try and make my 18 yr old take a covid test because she came to visit. She'd roll her eyes and ask if I had lost my mind, trying to make her do anything she didn't want to do. I raised her that way. You should chill, OP. No joke. |
