| I'm not sure the best forum to ask this question so forgive me if it is not here. I had a DD who is in 8th grade. Excellent at math (currently in Alg 2 Honors), loves to code - but isn't a big fan of science. What can she major in when she goes to college? I know she is young but with HS starting next year I think it makes sense to try to figure out what type of classes she should focus on in HS to position herself for her intended major. Without a love of science, engineering and CS seem a no go. Any advice on possible majors she should research and think about? |
| Math, computer science, information systems, business, finance, statistics |
| Epidemiology. Data science. |

Applied math, and yes computer science. Both involve no “science” whatsoever. Applied physics may touch on math from physics but computer science will not involve any science at all
Also economics, business as a pp mentioned. |
| Look for a school that offers a B.A. in Math. Then the student can concentrate on a non-science interest area like Language or Anthropology. The only time my B.A. degree was commented on was when working for a large government contractor that sent my credentials out for contract proposals. Sometimes, B.S. is explicit requirement in bid. |
| Also looks for Data Science or Quantitative Analysis. |
+ economics. My son and I are both the type that loves math and hates science (some physics is OK for both). We did not particularly like coding either. I am an actuary, he just got a job in strategy consulting; he is an applied math/econ double major. |
| Let her explore in HS, this could change. My DD loved math and liked CS in 8th. Completely changed mind in HS about CS. Still likes math but more into humanities and arts. CS would be fine for non-sciency math, but just let her take rigorous courses in a variety of areas she's interested in and see what shakes out. This is a concern for 10th grade when enrolling for 11th. |
| Also, encourage her to try fun events like Technica Hackathon (for next year, just finishing this year). My other DD loved that -- it's a big slumber party/hackathon for girls/nonbinary (college, HS & MS). My other DD has never loved coding but loves this (chocolate fountain and swag)! If yours likes coding, seek out fun opps like this. |
| Econ. It served me well. |

This is my son, now college freshman. His major is Computational Modeling and Data Analytics. He also loves maps/geospatial data so thinks he'll add a GIS minor.
When applying to colleges with different major options he put down statistics or applied math or data science His related classes in high school included math though BC Calculus + AP Stats, AP Economics, an introductory CS class and a dual enrollment geospatial data analysis class. And did a summer program on data science. Hates science and took just the basics, never took an honors science class. He doesn't particularly like coding but can do it and it's essential to working with big data. There's less of it in his program than if he majored in CS. |
| I majored in math. No science involved. She could double major in computer science. The two go together nicely. |
| I think data science is a great area. |
| Is this a joke? Literally a million things . |
This. Plus, cybersecurity. PS - actuaries make a ton of money. I’m talking live in a mansion and retire as a super-millionaire at 50 money. |
