APS - Report Cards

So elementary school report cards are pretty worthless, right? I can't decide how much I'm supposed to care since it all seems to be really generic feedback.

Last year a teacher accidentally uploaded all of her student evals to my kid's report card-- they were all the same. If there's a problem you'll hear about it somewhere other than the report card.

My son is only in 1st grade but every report card he’s ever received has another kids name in the comments

We do r have our report cards posted yet... And only half of our DIBLES was posted. They didn't do the other half of the assessment.

Completely useless. Our school now uses standards based grading. I don’t even bother opening it anymore.

Even without standard grading I don't get how my kids gets the grades he gets. We never get any assignments back. He is in 4th and mostly gets 100s on math tests but got a B. Why? No idea. The comments only say he is amazing.

Same my fifth grader got a B even though he has gotten 100s on tests, his teacher pulled him aside to say how great he was doing. My son was pretty upset so I suggested he ask his teacher for ideas about how he can improve.

Same. The report cards are useless.

But probably a lot easier for the teacher.

Here are the comment sections of every report card I’ve ever gotten.

Generic sentence about how great it is to have X in class.
Critical comments about whatever bugs them about your kid. If nothing, this is missing.
Generic statements about what the kids are studying that apply to every kid in class.

If these report cards take the teacher more than a couple of hours for the class, I don’t know how.

Don't show your elementary school students their report cards. Just don't. They don't need to worry about that now -- if they think they are doing fine and like their quiz grades -- that they can see -- then that's enough. And they do try to grade based on the written standard -- C = on level, B= above and A= whatever (I never had a student who got above a B). And as others pointed out -- it doesn't matter.

If he can’t go up a level in the class the teacher can’t justify their work. If he started with an A there is no place for him to improve
