confirmation of pregnancy visit?

Anonymous
At 40yo and mom to two already, I have been casually ttc for almost a year. I don’t have a regular Gyn or primary doc. We moved to NOVA in 2019 and at that time I was up to date on screenings. Which is my long way of saying, now that I have a BFP, I see some people talking about getting blood draws to make sure hcg levels are going up…but when I called for a new prenatal visit the first I can be seen wouldn’t be until I’m
at least 8-10wks. Should I keep calling other places to get bloodwork done or let it be?

Do they know you're 40? At my practice (GW), because of COVID, there's no pregnancy confirmation visit UNLESS you're high risk (history of miscarriages, over 40, etc.).

Also, congrats!

The blood draws, etc. are usually for people who are struggling with infertility and already under the care of an RE. Unless you need to know for sure if you're pregnant at 4-5 weeks, there's not really any point. Most OBs won't see you until 7-11 weeks (depending on the practice).

Congrats, OP! Hope everything goes well for you!

I mean there isn’t much you can do, right? We’re you on progesterone for your other pregnancies?

Thanks for the quick feedback. No I wasn’t on progesterone with my other pregnancies, but I was only 30
and 35 with them.

Not sure where in NOVA but you could try Reiter Hill Falls Church. I go to their DC office and they are diligent about HCG regardless of age in the early weeks. They caught a potential ectopic with me at 4 weeks and I’m very grateful!

Absolutely is a point. HCGs that don’t double every 48 hrs could be an early warning of an ectopic.

You can call, of course, but I don't think most practices will see you unless you're at least 6 weeks along or are experiencing complications. Reiter and Hill says 6-10 weeks.

CWC K st office also brings everyone in for an early confirmation appointment. As mom to a toddler, I tried to get out of it, but they told me the doctors strongly prefer everyone to come in for the blood draw, regardless of age.

CWC in Silver Spring did a blood draw.
