We are getting away for a couple days the week after Christmas. I've never been to Asheville and thought we'd drive down and go through a couple college campuses on the way down 81. Besides the Biltmore (which I don't think our kids would be interested in touring), what else can we plan to do in two days in Asheville. We will be staying right downtown, so I'm personally just looking forward to hitting some good restaurants and doing a little shopping. Will our teens be bored out of their minds? Pinball museum? What else? |
The Biltmore is truly amazing, kids of all ages actually like it. Unless your kids have already done mansions like up in Rhode Island, I wouldn’t rule out Biltmore. Family ships like these are opportunities to do things they wouldn’t ordinarily want to do at home. There are a ton of art galleries, and hiking trails. |
the bilmore is the most overrated place. go to the glassblowing place it is really great, go hiking and there is a zip line place not far from there |
by begin downtown don't be shocked at the amount of homeless 20somethings. |
I took my teens (14 and 16) to the Biltmore and they loved it. I think it's definitely worth going if you're already in Asheville. |
We have been because I wanted to go but don’t kid yourself. It is not truly amazing for kids. My kids also didn’t love Monticello but it was probably an equal trip for them. My kids found the slave quarters interesting at Monticello. |

Personally, I can't imagine going to Asheville and not going to the Biltmore (unless you go there all the time). I've been and I haven't taken my kids yet but we went to The Breakers in Newport and they were amazed (DS 8 and 10). But they love historic homes.
The breweries are also fun--obviously they can't drink but it's nice to just sit outside. I did the city trolley tour and found it very interesting. |
Definitely the zip line. Our youngest was too small for it when we went last year but would love it. |
I would recommend the Grove Park Inn for lunch or dinner even if you aren’t staying there, it’s a very impressive historic hotel and the teens will like the lobby, fireplaces, the view and walking the grounds. I’d also recommend one of the skate park or indoor trampoline places if they like those things, hiking at DuPont state park (waterfalls), Sierra Nevada brewery - nice outdoor grounds with cornhole and live music if weather is good. Also, the arboretum has drive through lights during the holiday season, and that could be fun. There’s also a decent outlet mall not far from downtown if they want to do some shopping. About an hour to 90 minutes away - in Maggie Valley and in Boone - are ski slopes and snow tubing. Have fun! |
This is helpful, thanks! Sounds like we should be able to fill two days easily. |
There’s a lot to do there besides the Biltmore, although I do think the Biltmore is fun and interesting, I understand why some teens may want a more “active” trip. (We have littles and visit family there often, but usually in the summer or fall!) |
Axe throwing is fun. Maybe they have the drum circle at that time of year too, that's fun and right downtown. |
