What spirit for gift?

I'm thinking of getting a bottle of alcohol as a gift for someone from overseas - Asia. They are curious about spirits and would happily try something new, that's good sipped neat or in cocktails.
Which should I get, rye whiskey or mezcal? I did bourbon previously - trying to think of ones that are more American/ hard to find outside North America.

Also any suggestions for good options around $50 would be great, thank you!
