We're doing Thanksgiving early this year because of travel constraits, so we'll do all the turkey and trimmings this weekend. However, I'd still love to cook something big on the day itself, but I know we won't want turkey twice in one week.
So if you were building a thanksgiving meal not around turkey, what would it be? 4 adults, handful of kids. No pork. My husband suggested Thanksgiving pizza, so he is no help .

Spiral sliced ham.
If I were with my family, would be great, but my inlaws don't eat pork. thanks though! |
steak and baked potato with all the fixings. Bacon wrapped brussel sprouts or caesar salad or spinach salad with blue cheese dressing. Yummy rolls. Chocolate mousse.
Maybe a shepherd's pie or lasagna? Something homey and comforting.
What about lamb? I've always kind of wanted to do one of those lamb crown roasts. Seems really festive.
Or if you want something more turkey-like, maybe roast a duck instead? We have done that instead of turkey a couple times because we're a small family and it's a nice change. |
No one in my family likes turkey, so we usually do something different in the poultry family -- duck or pheasant or roast chicken in a pinch. We're a small family, though. I think roast duck with plum sauce was one of our better experiments recently -- and the leftover fat made AMAZING yorkshire puddings the week after.
I make butternut squash chili as the main. -vegetarian
I would do prime rib or beef tenderloin. You could have different versions of the traditional sides, like baked sweet potatoes or roasted fingerling potatoes, so there’s still some remnants of Thanksgiving dinner but doesn’t feel like the same meal.
I'd definitely do Chinese food. But since you want to cook something big, I'd go with prime rib.
Honey baked ham, save the bone for soup later, when it is colder
I'm personally of the opinion that there are no rules for holiday meals. No reason the main dish on Thanksgiving can't be lasagna or chili or beef wellington. Just make whatever makes you happy.
Mexican menu. We do this sometimes for Christmas if we’ve just had a traditional thanksgiving menu and want something different.
Beef tenderloin
We grill or broil Cornish game hens. So good!
