Expectant and Postpartum Moms
I have no idea what kind of bottles are best--any recommendations? How many and what sizes?
A lot of my friends liked the playtex drop-ins, which use disposable liners. I registered for two drop-ins "gift sets" at babies r us; the sets have bottles in multiple sizes, as well as several kinds of nipples.
one of each one. you'll never know what works for YOUR baby till you try them.

If you're planning to breastfeed and supplement with formula, I highly recommend The First Years - Breastflow Bottle Starter Set (http://www.walmart.com/ip/The-First-Years-Breastflow-Bottle-Starter-Set-BPA-Free/10877977). We also have and really like the Avent Advanced (not Natural) bottles. We received the following gift set from our registry which comes with all the necessities:
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3372681. Personally, I don't see the point of the 4oz bottles since you'll eventually need the 9oz ones. So my suggestion is to get the 9oz ones to begin with. The number of bottles you need really depends on how often you think you'll get around to washing them between feedings. In other words, the more bottles you have the less often you will need to wash them. We were fine with 8 bottles for the first 2 months. Best to start off simple and add on later as needed. |
We started these when DC 1 was 8 mos and we tossed our Dr Brown's with BPA when that all came out. I don't think they are the greatest for a newborn in terms of the "system" for reducing air in the bottle. I am due soon and bought BPA free Dr Brown's and plan to use those for the first 6 mos, then go over to the drop ins once baby is older. The drop ins sure are convenient though. |
We bought the Avent bottles after having some latch issues as they are supposed to be the "best" for preventing nipple confusion. After that was resolved, we used avent and evenflo cheap glass bottles equally. DS had no real preference between breast or which bottle by the time he was 6 weeks old.
About the Avent bottles...I used them with DD #1 3 1/2 years ago and, although they worked very well for her, they always leaked. I know this has been a problem for Avent in the past. What about their newer bottles? Are they still leaking these days? DC #2 coming soon and we need to make a decision.
Avent bottles leaked like crazy; early on, he was only getting breastmilk in bottles so it killed me to waste even the tiniest bit. Born Free were fine and I'm not sure why we didn't stick with them. We use Dr. Brown's and there are 6 pieces - 7 if you use the travel disk insert to prevent leaking, 8 if you use a screw-on cap to mix formula - to wash for each bottle. That's a lot of parts and time spent doing dishes. I 'll try another brand for #2, probably the First Years Breastflow linked above.
We used Medela bottles that came with the pump and those worked well. Very slow, etc. We also used BornFree bottles. We liked them, but they do have extra parts to clean.
I'm due in a couple of weeks and bought glass Medela bottles. Has anyone used them? What do you think?
I know quite a few babies (including mine) who never really drank more than 4 oz. of milk at a time. By the time my baby was able to drink more milk than would fit in the bottle, he was ready for a sippy or regular cup. YMMV, however. |
I second the thought that born free have way to many random parts to wash, I hated them.
we went through 5 bottles before finding one DC could use, so don't get too many of one. We tried the medela slow flow that came with the pump stuff--waaayyy too fast for DC. Same with Avent. for some reason he dripped a lot with Dr. Browns. We used a Haberman at first, but at 30.00 a bottle, we were not going to continue using. We finally got the 4 oz Nuks, which seem fine. but he is still on the slowest nipple at 3.5 months. Also it is supposed to be shaped more like the book, though personally I think nipple confusion is not an issue for most babies, esp if you start them doing both at once.
Medela and Avent slow nipples were both way too fast, so we ended up with Playtex Drop-Ins. We just have two 4 oz liner-carriers (bottle frames) and that's plenty right now - baby only gets one bottle a day.
We used Dr. Brown's for our first. After he was off the bottle (hee hee!), the BPA free came out so we got rid of them. We had good luck with the Dr. Brown's and will get the BPA free kind for our second. The downside to Dr. Brown's is that they have extra parts and must follow the directions - don't fill past this line, don't shake with the extra parts.
