Best mid-size SUVs -- EV v. hybrid v. gas

Time to replace our ancient mid-size SUV, but we are still deciding on EV vs. hybrid vs. gas.

Hoping to test drive some options soon - what should we look at? Best mid-size SUV in each category?

Generally, we need space for family of 4 plus dog for frequent road trips and camping. Some off-road/snow driving. Roof rack for kayak.

If EV/hybrid, it would need high mileage range.

No budget constraints.

Thanks. Does it handle well off-road? Or maybe I should say off-road "lite". We go camping a bunch and sometimes end up a little off-road.

4runner hybrid would be cool, but no hybrid until 2025?

Any car can handle off road lite.

Some do better than others. We have seen friends and family struggle or get stuck in various conditions - sandy beach, mega pot hole dirt road, snowy parking lot, etc.

If I had no budget constraints, I'd get the Rivian SUV. Range is over 300 miles, and apparently it handles off-road just fine. https://rivian.com/r1s

Agree, Rivian SUV. Unfortunately if OP ordered today, I don't think he'd get it delivered until late 2022 at the earliest.

It’s on the radar but might be too new. I’d want to be able to test drive it first. Maybe a few years down the line. But on paper it looks great.

Who knows - with all of the chip delays it might be that soon before we get anything anyway.
