I am 45 and I have an immature palate. Here are the food items I do not eat/can't stand:
-Coffee--too bitter -Alcohol--too bitter -Olives--too salty and bitter --Dark chocolate--too bitter --Tea--too bitter --Mint--too strong --Nuts--can't stand the taste/texture of all nuts --Spices--too strong, can't even handle red pepper flakes, can't do spicy food at all I do like all sorts of exotic cheeses though, and eat almost all fruit and vegetables, as well as most seafood. I don't drink any alcohol. I only eat milk chocolate. For beverages, I mainly drink juice because I like sweet drinks. Why am I like this? I'm definitely somewhat of a picky eater. |
| Good Lord! Who Cares?? This is so stupid. |
| Are you a super taster? |
|
If you like sweet drinks, that would explain why almost everything else tastes bitter to you. Ease up on the sweet drinks — start diluting juices with increasing amounts of water up to a 1/2 and 1/2 mix or start drinking just plain water instead and you’ll get used to less sugar and the less sweet taste. It’ll be healthier for you, too.
Then you can try again with the foods and drinks that you think are too bitter. |

Coffee objectively tastes like dirt. I still drink it as a cheap course of caffeine, but is hard for me to believe anyone honestly enjoys the taste. You can go to a lot of trouble to make it taste less awful/bitter, but it still tastes like dirt water.
Dark chocolate isn’t much better. I don’t see the point. |
DP. No need to be rude. You didn't have to click on this thread, right? |

I think this is a normal length list of food aversions. If I invited you to dinner, you should tell me no nuts, snd them you’d skip the olives i set out with the apps and have the non-alcoholic drink I always have on hand for guests. I’d never know you thought you had an immature palate.
I’m also assuming that you could manage to take polite bites of a dessert that had a wayward nut or mint. When I don’t like something offered, I take a polite portion and profusely compliment what I did enjoy on the plate. The issue I have with adult food aversions is when people don’t simply say “no thank you”. The whole “I don’t like” followed by details, while others are in fact eating and liking said items is not conversation, it’s rude |
I genuinely love both of those and will even drink black coffee. People are different! I will never eat licorice or anything in the anise family. |
|
I wouldn't say you have an immature palate. This is a small list of foods you don't care for. I was expecting to hear that you eat Lucky Charms, chicken nuggets, and grilled cheese every day of the year.

Sounds like it especially in the Bitter department! I am somewhat of a super taster or maybe smaller b.c unlike OP I can't deal with exotic cheeses. Like when I eat any goat or sheep cheese-- all it tastes like to me is a barn yard. Like I can smell the poopy/lanolin smell of a sheep from the cheese. Same with boar sausages YUCK. I'm also a veterinarian and have smelled lots and lots of farm animals so IDK. I can taste the fish oil in eggs if the hens are fed that etc. So OP for sure be sensitive to bitter but at least they like funky, flavorful cheeses. I think that's very "mature" |
|
OP you are fine! All those things are totally optional! And lots of people don't like spicy food. As long as you are polite as PP said then you are good.
I would cut back on sugary drinks tho bc people our age gotta start to watch the sugars v close-- even normal weight people can get Diabetes!! |
+1 I think you have just trained your palate to expect a very sweet taste. |
| Agree about coffee. When I have to meet someone at Starbucks I get a hot water and pay for it as it it were coffee. |
There are times at night where I actually start looking forward to drinking a cup of coffee the next morning. It’s fine if you do not like it, but please open your mind to accept people like, care about, and place value on other things. OP, you are who you are. The only reason anyone cares is if you make a big deal about it, like saying how “yucky” something is while others are enjoying it. |

You're just like all the other Americans, OP. Bland, sugar, fat, salt. Most learned this as children, in the days of rice cereal, and most perpetuate this as adults because they just go for what's easy and available. This area makes you think everyone has a more subtle and discriminating taste, but really, most of the US is like you. |
