Toddler refuses to sit in stroller

Anonymous
Title says it all, my toddler refuses (kicking and screaming and crying “nooooooo”) to go in the stroller. Any advice? Due to upcoming travel through airports, big cities etc we need the toddler to sit in the stroller for safety reasons.

Buckle him in and ignore the tantrum.

Snacks helped. Go for short trips at first extending the time everyday regardless of the screaming. Make sure the stroller is comfortable and straps are not too tight.

I had the same issue with my now 18 month old who always wanted to be worn since her older brother was in the stroller. Once he was in preschool I had to train her to sit in the stroller as I HATE carriers.

My toddler is great in the stroller now.

Eek. We got a wagon when my first child didn't like the stroller, but that prob won't help you for airports. Try a leash?

Snacks, yes - if you can see him/her. And absolutely start with short trips regardless of the screaming. Your child has to learn. Praise, praise, praise after the stroller trips.

Do what you would do if he had this reaction to the car seat?

Just do it. Crying doesn’t kill toddlers.

This might be the only way. A snack etc, would likely just be thrown.

Start now. When do you travel?

Tablet.

Is there not enough time to let them walk?

Are they too big for a carrier? Would a child leash help keep them safe so you (and they) can have breaks? I also have a stroller hater which is good for me right now (not traveling any time soon) so I definitely feel you.

Try a different stroller? We went on a trip to visit some family and for some reason my toddler just hated the stroller they had.

That’s why I bought a Maclaren….5 point straps to hold my wild child securely.

Absolutely not!

Just buckle in and start moving. Ignore the screaming. Rinse and repeat.

Have you tried out different strollers? Seated relatively high vs lower, with a bar in front vs without, front facing vs rear facing, firm vs cushiony vs minimal support, even standing vs sitting. It might be that your toddler would be resistant to anything that decreases freedom and exploring, but there might be something about using a stroller that could be improved.
