Infertility Support and Discussion

Hi everyone,
Are there any PCOS patients out here who miscarried after a successful IVF procedure and then went on to have FET? I had my first IVF cycle in January, got pregnant and then miscarried at nine weeks. Now I'm hearing that PCOS patients are more at risk for recurrent miscarriages and I'm worried that I will have another miscarriage, which freaks me out since the first one was so devastating. The so-called good news is that we have four frozen embryos but what if the whole batch is bad? If you have similar experience, I'd love to hear your story ... especially if it was successful. Thanks! |
| OP, are you on metformin? PCOSers (like me) do have a higher risk of miscarriage during the first trimester but taking metformin reduces the risk to that of a non-PCOSer. Both my RE and "regular" endocrinologist thought metformin was essential during the first trimester. I took it until 15 weeks and was scared to go off (but did and carried to term and DS is healthy). FYI, I found that my OB team (practice of 5 doctors) really wasn't up to date on metformin research. They originally advised that I go off it as soon as pregnant but my RE and Endo said no way, you HAVE to keep taking it. I think it's key. Data really supports this and so many pregnant women have taken metformin (for diabetes) during pregnancy over the years that my RE and endo think that it's as safe as medication can get and it will help prevent m/c. Of coures you'll never know why you m/c--it could have just been one of those things and I'm so sorry. What an awful thing to go through. For your peace of mind and to reduce your risks, do speak to your RE and/or an endocrinologist about metformin if you're not on it. |
| I am diagnosed PCOS and had a healthy pregnancy after injectibles. A good friend has a healthy pregnancy after IUI (also PCOS diagnosed). There are successes! |
| 10:29 here again. Just wanted to say that my RE and endo are gung ho about PCOSers in general taking metformin during the first trimester to reduce the risk of m/c--I have never shown insulin resistance and they still thought it was important. |

OP Here. Thanks so much for your comments! I will be starting on metformin shortly and will begin cycling for FET in a month or so. My HCG is finally down to zero so just waiting for AF to arrive and then go from there.
During your FET, did you use the progesterone oil injections or use the Endometrin suppositories? My doctor says either one is fine so I'm a little torn. Also, when you went in for the FET, did you transfer one or two embryos? |
PP here! How exciting, OP! I know it's stressful but it sounds like you're in good spirits. I did the Endometrin. We transferred two embryos. Both originally "took" but I had a vanishing twin. At the 7 week u/s only one heartbeat and the other was measuring way behind and stopped growing. For me a singleton was the ideal outcome so I am happy with how everything worked out. Looking forward to going back for another FET next year perhaps to get a sibling for DS. Fingers crossed for us both. All the best to you, I am glad to hear that you are going on metformin. I'm not one to say this lightly but it's as close to a miracle drug as it gets for me.

| I also have PCOS and had to push the RE to let me take Metformin through the first trimester. Who knows whether it had an effect or not, but so far so good -- we are at 18 weeks.... |

Have PCOS & took Metformin throughout 2 successful pregnancies.
If you are just going on Metformin for the first time, please make sure it is extended release or else you'll have tummy issues... |
