HBCUs: Former Governor Wilder criticizes fmr Gov. McAuliffe + Gov. Northam

Anonymous
Yes - Douglas Wilder, the first Black governor elected in Virginia, is just a private citizen, so what.

He is still active in politics, and ABC News local affiliate still sees fit to publish Governor Wilder’s thoughts on current politics today.

Is the HBCU issue why McAuliffe lost?

Governor Wilder stated (in part only; link at bottom):

“ Wilder, who was the first African American ever elected as a governor in the United States, called out Gov. Northam and former Gov. McAuliffe for not funding historically black colleges and universities when given the chance.
“And if you had an opportunity to do it and haven’t done it, there’s a reason for it,” said Wilder. “Terry McAuliffe has had an opportunity to do it. He hasn’t done it as it relates to historical black colleges and universities. Ralph Northam has an opportunity now to do it. So we need funding for historical black colleges and universities and Glenn Youngkin indicated he’s going to support that. And yet it’s not being supported today by Northam. We had $4.3 billion set aside from the monies provided by the federal government. Not a dime - not a dime - of that money has been allocated for historical black colleges universities.”

“There are some who believe that Virginia Union – my alma mater – and Hampton University and Lynchburg School should not be because they are called private institutions,” Wilder aded. “Why are they private? Because you were not permitted to have integration in any schools in Virginia, so if you wanted to go to college you had to go to Virginia Union or Hampton, or St. Paul, or some other schools that are around... And let me just say this: Virginia is such that for a Democrat to win, I believe this, there has to be strong turnout in the black community. The real question then is what has been done for that to be benefiting the candidates who are running? Who has a record of doing something in that regard if given the opportunity?”

“Do you think Terry McAuliffe has done enough for that community?” 7News Reporter Nick Minock asked Wilder.

“Well, would you tell me what it is? And then we can determine whether that’s enough. I’m trying to find out what it is. You can tell me because you’ve been covering government and politics for a while. Tell me what it is that’s supposed to have been done that Mr. McAuliffe says. Would you tell me?"

“We will be sure to ask him [McAuliffe] the next time we have the opportunity,” Minock responded.

“And you might be not asking the right question again,” Wilder said in a chuckle, referring to Minock’s recent interview when McAuliffe told him he “should have asked better questions” “questions your viewers care about.”

“ Wilder said education is the number one issue in the race for Virginia governor. Wilder criticized McAuliffe for saying “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.”

“I have no idea what he is talking about,” said Wilder. “I have no idea what authority he feels he has. I think if Terry McAuliffe had to state it again he would regret having made that statement. Yet look what that statement triggered. The Attorney General of the United States talking about the FBI and parents. Are they terrorists? Are they criminals? To be concerned about their children? It’s a very, very, very big issue. An important issue in Virginia and it is today.”
