Can somebody answer this question:
If it turns out you qualify for little to no aid, will checking the FA sought box reduce chances of admission at need aware schools? I’ve heard no because they can see you won’t require much. But I don’t know for sure that the number is in front of them when deciding? Also, if considering yield, might it be held against you if they decide you qualify for nothing because you might be less likely to attend? Or, put another way, will my not a superstar kid have a better chance at getting admitted if I make it clear with the box checks that we are a full pay family? |
At need aware schools, not checking the box for financial aid (indicating you are full pay) will absolutely benefit you, especially when combined with ED. Any need blind schools it will have no effect. |
| For some need-aware schools, need only enters into it if the admissions committee is down to choosing a few final candidates and has already committed the available financial aid to students who were clearer calls. So for a student on the bubble, it might help. |
| what if you click yes, seeking, but you really don't qualify for any anyways as per FAFSA? |
Why would you bother to do that? Unless the school needs out for merit aid (few do) it will only hurt. |
Our W school recommends everyone check the box because a lot of people misfigure or assume they’re ineligible. |
Very few students at a W school qualify for anything. |
Your school recommend people to use the Net Price Calculator before they apply instead. Most schools do. |
| ^^^ "should recommend people use", bad editing sorry. |
At our W school, nearly 200 students receive FARMs. Many more have an EFC under $75,000. |
At college counseling night, we were told all fill out the Fafsa and check the box. I was a little surprised. |
+1 for using the Net Price Calculator rather than blindly submitting financial aid forms. I don't understand why all high schools don't recommend this. It has its caveats, but is a first step. |
| Most financial aid comes in the form of loans. If you’re willing to take them out, filling out the FAFSA gets you access to what you’re eligible for. But most donut hole families are not getting free money outside of merit. |
200 in the senior year class? |
Why should everyone in a W school ask for aid? That is absurd. |
