mandatory extended warranties on new cars

I went to put a deposit on a new car this evening, and was told that both maintenance plan add-ons were mandatory for each car sold. I called BS, and told them we weren't interested, to remove it, and the salesperson repeated that he had to add them in, they were non-negotiable. We walked out, but I wondered if this is legal, and if it's not, where can I find documentation so this doesn't happen at the next dealership. It's a pretty sought after car, so my negotiation tactics are limited.

Its a gimmick. But they can ask whatever they want for the car. All supply and demand.
