We are new to the area and live near Alexandria. My son is 11 (so, he'd be U12 this year) and has been playing travel soccer elsewhere for several years. He's pretty good so we are looking to find a club nearby that plays in a competitive leage.
I've learned about NCSL and it seems to be the big league around NoVA, or at least one of them. It looks like MLS Next and ECNL are top leagues but for older kids? What league does the Alexandria boys' soccer team play in? Are they in NCSL? |
| The pre-MLS Next squad plays locally in EDP's ADL and more regionally in the Acela Premiership. |
Thanks. I guess I need to do more search ... hadn't learned about EDP ADL yet ... So. Many. Leagues. |
For sure. I only recently found out about the Acela Premiership thing thanks to Youth Soccer Rankings. My kid is at another club in EDP - ADL and I had a quick bout of FOMO. Then felt thankful. 11 yr. olds probably don't need to be travelling all over the Northeast to play two games a weekend. |
The main things to understand are that (1) Alexandria's top teams play in a competitive league at all ages. (2) The most competitive teams driveable for you are (in alphabetical order): Alexandria, Arlington and SYC. Any of those will offer a sufficient challenge for any kid. It's hard to know what "pretty good" means, so it's entirely possible that the second team at any of those clubs might offer a sufficient level of play too. |

Alexandria will play NCSL for their 2nd, 3rd tier teams. Their top teams are referred to as RED and play CCL. As they get older the boys can play MLSNext as that then becomes the top program at the club.
A lot of options at Alexandria. Dont kill yourself driving the beltway for a club or league. Go try out at Alexandra, get a look and give them a try. If after a season/year or two you like something else then go at that time. My kid moved to Alexandria around U13 and has been there ever since. The club has served us well. |
| Unfortunately CCL is a joke for the most part. |
Thank you. What is Acela Premiership? |
Long drives to play New Jersey teams |

The Acela schedule is usually only over two weekends (we played 3 games each weekend). My DS played for Alexandria in that league and the level of competition was eye opening. Not like going up to PA to get smoked by Philly Union and NY Red Bulls. |
Is that the Samba Boyz at the bottom of this table? |
it's a lot of the mls next clubs for u12. For top clubs around Philly/NY on boys side, it is their principal league, and for Alexandria, it is usually multiple games over a few weekends in fall and then in spring. |
Nope they are 2012 birth year and probably playing up somewhere and winning most of their matches. |
