SUNY Binghamton?

Please let me know if you have any feedback or opinions about SUNY Binghamton. My DD (Jr) is considering it. We are in NY. I am encouraging her to have a list where she can be excited about all of the schools. Hoping this can be one as it would be a financial safety, as well. My perception is that it is one of the stronger publics, academically speaking. Feel free to share honest, even negative, perspectives as well, as we are so early in the process. Thank you.

They have rebranded and are now Binghamton University. It’s on my radar too but I don’t know too much about it. I hope others will weigh in.

DH went there. Strong academics, very unattractive campus in a depressed part of your upstate NY. Lots of bad weather from lake-effect in winter.

Back in my day, it was where the smart kids who couldn’t afford a private university went.

If you are in-state, there is no better bang for your buck. Great educations, very smart cohort of students. It's SUNY, so there is no lazy river, but you will be proud to have your kids attend, and they will leave well educated.

My older sister went - graduated in 95 or '96? They made fun of townies who were practically rednecks If you can be such a thing in upstate NY. All her friends left immediately upon graduation - there's no such thing as staying there afterwards.

I applied back in ‘81 and they rejected me; was accepted at Syracuse, RIT and Stony Brook (where I eventually went). I’ve had a grudge against them since, but I’ve heard good things about the academics.

Stony Brook has a pretty good hospital.

It's one of the best of the SUNY schools. Top kids from NY go there. Hear good things about it. I know there isn't much to do around there.

Your sister sounds like a real peach.

Still true today, though the city of Binghamton is a dump.

A friend of mine used to work there and said there are a lot of family "clans" there that intermix, leading to the above observation.

That part of NY state is very pretty, nice hiking, etc., but no idea if students get out into nature.

Kids from NYC and LI aren't into hiking or nature.

Yes, yes, she's got exactly the same maturity she had at 17 that she now does in her mid 40's.

Binghamton and Geneseo are considered the top SUNYs. I don’t think my DD will apply to Binghamton based on how depressing it is to drive through, but she felt more positive toward Geneseo. Has your daughter considered it?
