Refinishing Engineered Hardwood Floors?

Anonymous
Just bought a home with engineered hardwood floors that are in good condition, but are just ugly. Wide, short planks with a very ugly tone. They aren’t that “scraped” look, so are smooth. Is it possible to resurface and stain engineered hardwood? Are we better off replacing the floors with real hardwood before we move in - or is that a ridiculous expense?

Yes, they can be refinished a few times.

Whatever you decide to do, do it before you move in!! Absolutely. And keep in mind that if you want to install sand in place hardwoods, the whole process will take a few weeks before you can move in. Find a good floor company and ask them about the existing floors.

OP here. Thanks! Can anyone recommend a good floor company?

Can the refinishing get rid of those beveled edges? Ugh hate those.

If they’re not the length or width you want, I think the $ spent on refinishing would be a waste. Just replace with what you want.

Ask your realtor for a local rec.

Not always. It depends on the thickness of the wood planks. They're not all created equal.

This. You will need to figure out the thickness of the top layer before going ahead. Ours is 4mm and we were told it should be possible to refinish it 2 times.

Yes, of the top layer is thick enough to be sanded down that much.

PP here. Exactly, We chose 6mm for this exact reason. And it cost us a pretty penny.
