APS math partial credit?

Anonymous
Do your child's MS or HS teachers give partial credit on math tests? DS recently took a test and made a dumb error when writing the answer in the answer box, even though the work showed he got to the correct answer. Think 4x + 2 = 38, he showed his work and solved for 9 but then in the answer space wrote 38.

Technically he missed the question since the answer in the answer block was wrong, but the teacher could clearly see his work and that he knew the right answer. I was surprised that there wasn't a partial credit option as I recall at least way back in my day that was a thing and is why they always wanted you to show your work.

Is that a teacher by teacher decision, or is that how APS policy works? Not a big deal worth complaining to the teacher, since I assume someone here knows the answer.

How annoying! Yes my kids have always gotten partial credit as far as I know. Not an APS policy.

Our teacher still hasn’t given our kids the first test they had of the quarter even though their second test is today, because he says not all children have finished the test. Kids were able to go back and do a retest but they aren’t able to see what they originally did wrong. It makes no sense. Is this normal? I expect my kids to work and study hard, but if they’re not mastering a topic (and aren’t aware), that’s going to compound over the year which is my concern.

This is up to the teacher but it is something your student should go and speak with the teacher about. It's a lesson for your student as well, to go over their answers before turning in.

If your kid is in HS and headed to college, navigating this on their own is good preparation.

I’m OP, and this definitely is a good lesson for DS. Both we and the teacher have emphasized this to hi. Again, not something I would complain about, just wondering what’s typical.

We are having the same issues with my kid’s MS algebra teacher. The syllabus specifically says students must show their work to get partial credit, but the teacher still doesn’t give partial credit when work is shown.
