I wonder if they were freshmen -- kids who had to make a big transition to college after being out of school and social life for a year.
Even if they weren't freshmen, they were students who probably had lost the tethers of social connections during the virtual learning b/c of Covid. The stress and isolation is real. Terrible news. |
| Kids are pushed so hard these days in K-12 that they get to college and break. Just break. The pandemic cannot be helping matters. |
|
I have a college freshman, not at UNC. This is just so heartbreaking: I know there are ppl out there who say well what do you expect, college is hard. But these ppl fail to see that the drill drill drill way of teaching and learning is not worth a human life lost so young.
i agree with the freshman interviewed that the one day of wellness is not enough. Schools need to do more. |

Really surprising.
Isn’t unc a pretty chill, work life balance, fun, pretty student body school? It isn’t Cornell. |

Truly heartbreaking and so tragic.
But please stop guessing at the reasons. Suicide is a top killer of 18 to 22 yr olds who aren’t even in college and was a top killer pre-covid. |
+ 1 the prestige comes from its grad programs and the small percentage of OOS students so this is surprising. |
Stop blaming covid for everything and rationalizing it. These kids had untreated mental health issues. Maybe it was a parent like you who blame shifts rather than supports. |
Oh please, everything is dumbed down now. |
How do you know they were untreated |
| I do wonder if more people need to stop pushing kids to go straight to college after high school. It just seems like there are so many threads from people who are concerned, but then bow to the norm. |

The Ivy League students only take 4 classes a semester and have grade inflation. Flagship State schools are harder. |
| My child is at another flagship and they had 1 suicidal this year |
