Expectant and Postpartum Moms
Recently moved to nova and go to physicians for women and it is HUGE, long waits and some of the assistants/aides there are crazy rude. Love, love, LOVE dr. hibshman (sp?) but the practice is a factory. any suggestions for a small, reputable practice w/docs that are down to earth and personal? just looking for that perfect place, shouldn't be that hard to find rt? thnx!!

| op here - forgot to mention that i looked at a few threads but most rec's seem to be in fairfax, mclean, or someplace kinda far out. |

I see Dr. Jane Piness at VHC. My only complaint about this sole practitioner's office is that there are long waits sometimes. Seriously, bring a book, a bottle of water, and a snack bar.
Other than that, she's fantastic. Doesn't rush visits at all. The office staff and nurses are all wonderful. My husband even complimented the billing department when we had a lab-bill problem. She's also got a nurse who responds to phone questions (you must leave message but responses come back in 20 minutes or a few hours if nurse needs to consult with MD). I have not delivered yet but she reports delivering 80% of "her babies". Also, she shares call with some other MDs who have great reputations... |
| I also originally went to Physicians for Women and was disappointed. Am now with Women to Women OB/GYN and so far I have no complaints. Everyone is polite and doctors take time to answer all questions. |
| Love, love, love Drs Elliot and Lashgari. Haven't delivered yet but have made it to 39+ weeks and have been very happy with the prenatal care. I've only had one longish wait my entire pregnancy but I make most of my appointments for first thing in the morning. Also love the nurses and the in-house u/s tech. They deliver at VHC and share call with Rossi, Crowther, Masel and Born and--I think--also the aforementioned Jane Piness, all of whom have excellent reputations. |
| Dr. Cheryl Ferrier. The best! |

I am with Physicians and Midwives again for my second pregnancy. I never have waits past 10 minutes, and I really love everyone save one midwife. You have to deliver at INOVA Alexandria, but that was a plus for me as well. I had a wonderful delivery there, and wouldn't change a thing about my prenatal care, delivery, or hospital.
Good luck! (Dr. Cuttingham is especially wonderful.) |
| Absolutely adore Dr. Masel with Arlington Women's Center. You never feel rushed; she always takes time to explain things clearly and thoughtfully. Dr. Masel deliver both DD and DS and did so with such skill, empathy, and professionalism. I have never bothered to write a thank-you note to a doctor or any service provider of any sort (I figure payment is usually thanks enough), but we were so moved by Dr. Masel's phenomenal bedside manner and expertise that we penned a gushing letter of thanks to her. The other physicians in her practice are all fantastic as well, but the office isn't so large that you get lost in the shuffle (I think there are only two other docs and a midwife). Good luck! |
| I second Dr. Masel. While I have only seen her and Karen King, my pregnancy ended too soon and Dr. Masel was great. She has a nice bedside manner and is quite caring. I also wrote her a thank you note and received a follow up phone call from her - which was nice given my issues. The front office staff were very nice and very helpful for me - taking care of necessary referrals, etc. I have heard good things about Dr. Rossi and Dr. Crowther who are also in the practice. And the nurse, Anna, is PHENOMENAL! |
| A second for Dr. Ferrier; she's AWESOME! |
| Dr. Tchabo is great - own practice out of VHC. Very old school about things (known in area for vaginally delivering breeched babies). A Georgetown med student friend recommended him because of his unbelievable knowledge and great bedside manner - and apparently he never sleeps or goes on vacation because he is always there for delivery (does share call at this point though). |

I go to Jane Piness-she is a solo practitioner so you see her and only her when you go. The plus is that she knows you and it is definately not a factory. The negative is that you may have to wait if she has another patient who has an emergency. I'd say 60% of the time I am seen right on time, the other 40% I have to wait. She delivered my first and will deliver my second. She's really good.
She is Board Certified (check on this one if it is important to you as some of the Drs listed in thread are good, but may not be Board certified) and she trained at G-town. She's hard to get in with though (in terms of being a new patient) so I'd look to schedule soon (she is at VHC). She shares a rotation coverage with 5-6 other drs (majority of whom are female and many of whom are listed in this thread)! |
| I second Physician's and Midwives, it is a large practice but I usually make appointments at the Kingstowne office which only has one OB and one Midwife each day, I have never had to wait more than 5-10 min. (usually less). I have really loved the doctors and midwives that I have met with (except for 1 midwife) they have been really patient and anwsered all of my questions. |
| I second the vote for Dr. Tchabo. I went to him for a consult this last week (I have a breech baby at 37 weeks). I called on Tuesday and explained my situation and they got me in on Thursday morning. He had wonderful bedside manner and was quite helpful. I guess the one downside that I experienced and have read about is the long wait. I thought he was worth the wait. |
| I have been seeing Drs. Elliott and Lashgari for about four years - am due 10/1; so far everything has been great with gyn and ob appointments. They are generally on time (the only time I had to wait was when I was "worked into" the schedule for what I thought was an emergency.) Doctors are very responsive - I've had tons of questions; I leave a message with the receptionist and I get a call back from a doctor quickly. Considered switching to Reiter Hill downtown for convenience (closer to my office). After one visit I went back to Drs. Elliott and Lashgari - terrific practice. |
