Washing a municipal compost bin

Anonymous
I’ve never been one to worry about how clean my recycling or garbage bins are, but my municipal compost bin is just gnarly. Everything that goes in there (other than pizza boxes and similar) gets bagged in biodegradable bags and over the summertime, they leaked through. I have some sort of… maggots? that are all over the inside. I hosed it down once in June, but those little larvae are again all over it and there’s an accumulation of grossness at the bottom. We keep the compostable materials in the freezer as long as they fit in there, so that we don’t have so much sitting outside, rotting in the heat.

Is there a biodegradable soap or something that’s storm sewer safe that I should be using?

That’s a great idea! But I’m going to have to figure out the angle/distance to stand at so I don’t get maggots and god knows what kind of rotten stuff splashed back at me.
