Where do you store your onions/potatoes, etc.?

Anonymous
I know they should be kept somewhere cool and dry (not fridge) but where is that in your house? I'm trying to tidy up my kitchen. Is there some kind of storage container worth buying? I find they go bad on the counter top quickly, but turn green in the fridge. I don't want to have to go far to get them (like the basement), though.

Stored in a ceramic pottery container with a lid and has holes. I also have a pantry. I read somewhere that onions and potatoes should not come into contact or they go bad quicker.

I store them in separate baskets in the lazy susan cabinet in the corner of the kitchen.

The fridge is too moist for them.

I keep onions in the fridge and potatoes in the pantry.

Onions in the fridge - makes them less smelly so you don't cry when you cut em.

In a two-compartment basket on an open shelf. I've left them a month and more like that with no problems. I've occasionally had an onion go bad, but the potatoes don't get weedy any faster than normal.

I have them in two baskets in my pantry too. Dark and cool, they last a very long time.

An add on to the OP's question: how do you prevent sprouting or black/white mold from growing on the onions or potatoes? I store mine in 2 side by side wicker baskets in a slide out shelf under a kitchen counter drawer and eyes/sprouts/mold can be seen on the veggies within a week of purchase. Ideas? Thanks.
