Lots of Lysol (aerosol).

Fill it up with water using a hose... add Clorox bleach or Pine Sol (not both) and let soak overnight, then dump out. No, it's not especially environmentally friendly but it sounds like drastic measures are necessary.

Yeah, i wouldn't necessarily fill it. Whatever spilled probably is stinking down at the bottom. But a good 6 inches or so of hot sudsy bleach water and leave it outside overnight (lid on, don't kill the wildlife). Let it dry thoroughly before using again.

If you want a more environmetally friendly alternative, spray some vinegar in it - wait 10 minutes and then rinse or wipe out (whichever you find easier). If you don't have a spray bottle to spare, just dump some in (white vinegar) and "swirl" it around.

Thank you - I'll start with the vinegar, but need to progress to bleach!

I put a splash of ammonia and some water in my garbage can and let it sit for a while, then dump it out (or rinse it out if I have the time).

Be sure not to mix ammonia and bleach. Pick one and stick with that.

Try cleaning with Borox. I recently discovered this old-fashioned miracle cleaner.

I left ours out in the sun the other day with the lid off. The sun alone did wonders. It does not currently smell.
