Hair thinning at crown… please just tell me what will help

Anonymous
I’m 38 and my hair has been thinning at the crown for a couple years now. I think it’s the “female pattern baldness” that you often see in post menopausal women (hair thinning at the back near end of part and on top of head) but I am lucky enough to be dealing with it about 20 years early. My hair is not thinning at the front nor underneath.

Does anyone else have this? If so what is worked for you to slow it down or possibly regrow some of what has been lost? I am self conscious about my scalp being visible from behind and it’s so depressing to see clumps of hair on the shower. I’ve had my thyroid levels checked multiple times as well as iron, ferritin, etc levels… all normal. It seems like every product has mediocre reviews. I tried rogaine foam for several months and if anything it got worse. What else should I try? Viviscal? Nutrafol? Prescription for spironolactone? Would love to hear from any women who have had success with at least stopping the thinning.

Nioxin 6 regime. You need to be patient. It might take six to eight weeks before you see improvement. You have to be diligent about following the instructions.

Wear a topper?

Magnesium, Iron, Lysine, vitamin D and vitamin B injections. Note that I take really large doses of all of those.

Get thyroid checked, take vitamins including iron, see a dermatologist

OP, try a hair thickening shampoo. I use the Tea Tree one and it seems to have at least slowed things down.

Are you under a lot of stress currently? Sometimes that can trigger a period of hair loss—usually temporary. Hair loss has also been linked to certain auto-immune conditions. Any chance you have an auto-immune disease?

Also, pick up some L’Oréal magic root cover up. A light application at your crown will help to keep bare scalp from showing through.

Biotin also. You need nutritious foods - eggs, fish, veggies.

Keep your scalp clean and healthy.

NP- I also have thinning hair but wasn't really sure who to see about it. Between GPs and really need to find a new one, ugh. But I do have a dermotologist and go for my annual skin check next month- is a dermo the appropriate avenue for an evaluation?

See a dermatologist. OTC Rogaine 5% foam - you will see increased shedding in beginning, keep at it. Prescription Ketoconazole shampoo, prescription Spironolactone, OTC Viviscal pills.

OP here. Forgot to mention that I tried Nioxin for over a year and it didn’t help, and that I’ve been to a dermatologist who said it’s just part of aging. All of my bloodwork is normal. No sign of an autoimmune disorder. The derm did offer to put me on spironolactone to stop the loss from progressing. She also mentioned PRP injections but they are expensive and supposedly painful. I’d love to hear from anyone who is tried either of these and had success with the type of thinning I have.

Stress is absolutely a factor. I had some thinning years ago during a stressful period of life but it came back. But now it feels like I am always shedding with no regrowth. I have stress levels typical of a working mom of two. Nothing crazy but I can’t realistically reduce my stress any further. Unless I start smoking pot or something, would that make me feel less stressed? Lol.

OP, you already have the answer to your own question. Are you hoping to hear something different from the DCuM crowd? There is nothing that will bring back a full head of hair that you may have in your youth. Aging is absolutely the biggest culprit along with stress/anxiety and bad nutrition.

Just try to live healthier, curb the stress, add exercise regiment and pay attention to mental health. Hair or no hair you just have to keep living your life and stop worrying about it.

Minoxidil is the ONLY thing that will help/.

The injections worked for me. Not that painful. Totally worth it.

How much does this cost?

Try peppermint oil. Put drop in shampoo in your hand, stir well, put on area, let it sit 20 minutes, then rinse and condition regularly. This oil has been studied. Won't work mixed in conditioner. Won't mix. Get real stuff from Doterra so you don't burn your head!
