Arlington food scraps containers

Anonymous
Is anyone else annoyed, yet feeling obligated to collect food scraps for composting? I have been collecting scraps until the container (with the little green bags they gave us) is full, but by then the bag is dissolving and it’s a disgusting mess. I can’t even put it neatly into the green bin. What am I doing wrong? I suppose I could fill it up only halfway but I don’t want to spend $$ on more of those bags.

Should I just give up? Is the environmental benefit worth it?

Good question. I just let my basket languish.

The bags dissolve too easily. I’ve bought another kind that is supposed to be more sturdy, but haven’t tried them yet. I learned my lesson and am more careful putting wet stuff in the bag or letting it sit for days. Some people suggest putting paper in the bottom to absorb excess moisture.

The bags break down easily - on purpose. We try to take it out at least daily.

You can also put in used paper towels to absorb some of the moisture.

Where are these green bins located? I haven’t seen any around my street.

It’s the same green bins you are supposed to put yard waste in. Same size as the trash and recycling

Tie off the top of the bag without removing it from the bin. Take the whole bin out to the green can and dump the contents in. If the bag has dissolved at all, you haven’t tracked the mess everywhere and can just rinse the bin out afterward. No mess.

Hard no from me. Not doing it.

I don’t feel obligated at all. I am Not composting. It’s disgusting.

I just take the countertop bin, tie up the top of the bag while it’s still in the bin, and dump it straight into the big green can and roll it straight out to the curb on trash. If it’s a little leaky oh well. Then I rinse the countertop bin out and there you go.

You can put paper grocery bags in green bin so we have been dumping small container into those first.

Op here, I thought about trying this. But one time I had paper bags and some oily pizza boxes in the green bin and the crew didn’t take it. So I wasn’t sure if that was allowed.

I did try doing that but the bag had dissolved so much I wasn't even able to pull it out!

Thankfully my DH has embraced that little bin with a zeal I haven't seen for other chores in a long time. He loves dumping stuff in there and taking out the gross little bag!

Sorry, I don't have any advice.
