This was a fun morning on Cabin John Parkway at the zipper. The car on the left goes, then it's my car's turn, but not according to the beat-up Prius who tried to tailgate the car in front of him to prevent me from taking my rightful place in the single lane. But I don't think he understood my willingness to win, ESPECIALLY when I know that I'm right. Suffice it to say that I bullied my way right in and laughed all the way to work while he flashed his high beams all along the Clara Barton (at 8 am ). I got so much satisfaction knowing that this pitiful middle manager lost control over yet another aspect of his life. If only he followed the rules of the road and learned to zipper...

Only people from Minnesota know how to zipper merge. I'm convinced of this.
Everyone else thinks they need to do some weird version of what the Prius dude did, and mess up traffic. |
| It's courtesy, and my 16 year old daughter knows this from hearing me exclaim, "zipper in" frequently, and yes, I permit others to zipper in. But, as I said, it's courtesy, not law, and had he hit you, or worse, been injured, that would have been on you. You may want to calm down on that morning drive. Yet another reason to ditch the McMansion and just move closer in. |
The zipper should be law

It's literally why traffic gets so slow right there. There are plenty of signs announcing the merge and the lane is clearly marked with two, then one lane. All he did was frustrate himself right into having a crappy day. |
| Yes! I’m fairly sure this was what was taught in the 90s but nobody practices it in the selfish DC area. |
No, it would have been on him since I was ahead of him and had the right of way. He only begged off when he realized that I would have absolutely let him hit me and would have sued the absolute shit out of him. It's cute that you think that instead of him being a better driver, I should actually move me and my entire family for Mr. 2010 Prius. Yeah, that makes sense. |
| Some places have the sign that says “alternate merge”. When I first saw it I was like what am I supposed to alternate with the merge? But at least it gets the point across. I’m not sure what the extent of the rule is—for instance, on the beltway inner loop when 270 merges in, there’s always a ton of people that cruise by the jammed traffic in the ending left lane and then expect people to let them n. Are you supposed to zipper merge there? I never want to let those people in. |
| I live in oregon and no one understands the zipper. There was construction on a local two lane each direction highway recently with one lane closed for a stretch. Every day, meek idiots would be merging into the left lane with three quarters of a mile of empty usable right lane as traffic backed up. Sensible drivers who understand how this is supposed to work would get blocked by self appointed lane police for trying to use the lane. It makes me mad just thinking about it. |
Yes, you’re supposed to let them in. They didn’t cruise by anything. They used the open lane. Why should the merge point be at some arbitrary spot some ways back? The merge point is where the lane ends. |
| Smart drivers understand that right of way is something yielded, not taken. You could have caused an accident. Created a nightmare for other commuters. Caused an injury. All to prove a stupid point. I always allow people to merge in. I understand how zipper works because I learned to drive in a more civil part of the country. But, I would never risk an accident (or worse, a road rage incident) just to prove a point. |

You writing all of this and starting the post makes you sound crazy Pyramid and you did not have the right of way. You inserted yourself in but yourself in because you are a bad driver. You should have yielded and merged when it was safe to do so |
| How about the DOUBLE zipper at the 395 exit to 7st st SW? People zipping left to get out of the exit lane that comes up too quickly and people zipping right to get into it because it comes up too quickly? |
I agree with you BUT you sound like a giant self absorbed asshole. |
