For beginners. Any recommendations? I'm a single mom & totally clueless. Also all relevant advice welcome! Thank you!

I know nothing about fishing, but I've seen people fish at Burke Lake and Ellanor Lawrence. I believe you need a fishing license, though.

Where are you located? Depending on the age, a license may not be needed. When DS was younger I looked up how to tie a fishing knot on YouTube and we watched and practiced with the most basic. We bought an inexpensive rod at Walmart. There are so many places around here to go that are easy. We can recommend if you tell us where you are. We used worms in the beginning and it’s easy to catch fish. Bring pliers, scissors and paper towels and/or wipes too. We used to go a lot to Riverbend and Lake Fairfax because they were close. He always caught more at Riverbend.

DS is a teen now and goes with his friend. They still go to Walmart for rods and lures. They aren’t experts by any means but learned a lot about fishing and casting from YouTube.

Only 16 and older need a license, and they sell bait on site at Burke Lake.

Are you just planning to catch and release? If not, you will need to learn how to clean the fish as well. I did this as a tween/teen but haven’t done it for maybe 25 years, so I’d see a refresher. I thought there were special days through parks and rec that showed families how to fish and maybe clean them too.
