I have a MCPS 2nd grader who accels academically. She is 2 grades ahead in reading and math both of which are available to her at our home school. Could she be more challenged? Probably?
If I asked her about changing school would she want to..probably not. Did you ask your child? Was your child so ahead that the school couldn't offer anything and was bored? Did you just jump at the chance for any available acceleration? Thanks for any input! |
For us, it was mostly a peer group thing. My child was bored, but more importantly he was lonely and felt so different from the other kids. Now, at his GT Center, he has a group of kids who understand him, teachers who understand what he needs ... it's wonderful. |
I echo what 13:48 said - and my DS Center Program grad is in college now. The center program was wonderful for him. He had a great peer group (they're still friends), and developed a sense of intellectual curiosity that has helped him to excel in HS and college. He wasn't happy about leaving his neighborhood school but that didn't last long.... |
Our son was just admitted to the Highly Gifted Center for the fall.
He was/is bored silly in his math class, which is accelerated, and we have spent the whole year riding his teacher and the math coordinator to keep him challenged. He gets 98s, 99s, and 100s on every test and spends a lot of time helping other kids (don't get me started). He is working above grade level in other subjects as well. He gets straight As with little effort. We don't see this as a good thing - we want him to stay engaged and work for grades. One of our biggest reasons for moving him is peers - we think he will thrive in an environment populated by kids of similar abilities and interests. |
PP here - we did ask him, and yes, he wants to go. |
My son complained of being bored and not learning anything much in first grade. I didn't ask him, but I did tell him that we were moving him to a school where all the kids were in the "advanced" math/reading groups, and he seemed OK with that decision. In our school district the TAG center schools start in second grade. |
