Returning baby gifts - etiquette

Anonymous
We received several gifts for our baby that I’d like to return/exchange because we will NEVER use them. What’s the etiquette re: thanking the gift givers?

For gifts we’re keeping, I always say something about how much use we’ll get out of them or how much the baby will like them. Any suggested language for thank you notes for gifts that are going back to the store?

Thank you!

"Thank you so much for the [useless item]. It was so thoughtful of you!"

Through with the above. Just keep it simple. “ Thank you so much for whatever it was. It was so kind of you to think of us. We appreciate your thoughtfulness and warm wishes welcoming our baby. Look forward to seeing you…”

Just thank them like you would do if you’re using the gift. Are you planning to tell them you’re returning it?

Thank them and before the next Christmas/birthday rolls around set up a college savings account and ask for money for that to head off future unwanted items.
