Teachers - Covid Booster

Anonymous
Are teachers included in this wave of covid booster shots?

Per FDA website:

“individuals 18 through 64 years of age whose frequent institutional or occupational exposure to SARS-CoV-2 puts them at high risk of serious complications of COVID-19 including severe COVID-19.”

Does teaching include “occupational exposure”?

Does it matter? You can walk into anywhere and get a booster without being asked for proof. That list of underlying conditions in VA is so extensive that almost everyone who had Pfizer qualifies, if they want one.

DP
I found this on the VDH site:

Examples of conditions include, but are not limited to, the following :

Cancer
Cerebrovascular disease
Chronic kidney disease
COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
Diabetes Mellitus (type 1 and 2)
Heart conditions (such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathies)
Obesity (BMI greater than 30 kg/m2)
Pregnancy and recent pregnancy
Smoking, current and former
For more examples, please see the CDC page titled “People with Certain Medical Conditions.”

Individuals between the ages of 18 and 49 with conditions such as these may choose to get a booster based on their individual benefits and risks.
https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/covid-19-faq/vaccination/

And this on the CDC site:
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/people-with-medical-conditions.html

I wouldn’t say it seems very extensive, but it does seem to be fairly easy to get as it also says:

No. Proof is not required. Individuals will be asked to self attest, or self-report, that they meet the requirements set by the CDC and FDA to receive a booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

Teachers who got Pfizer are. Teachers who got Moderna are left hanging or have to get an off label third dose.

While the FDA approved boosters for people in certain professions (including teachers), the CDC did not so teachers are not currently eligible for boosters based on their job.

The CDC director overruled the committee decision. Teachers are eligible.

It appears the VDH changed the obesity qualifier from 25 BMI to 30 BMI.

Why would you want a booster if you got Moderna? It seems pretty protective. I am a teacher who got moderna and won’t get a booster.

Yeah. You'll need that. It's a lower dose for number#3, and Moderna also has waning efficacy after time. It will happen.

What was the reason for not approving for everyone? I’m am ES teacher and I’m wondering if I really need to get the booster or if it can wait. I had my second Pfizer dose on Feb 19.

A teacher at my school was vaccinated the same week as you (Pfizer). She’s currently in quarantine after getting covid. I don’t want myself and my children to have to quarantine for 10 days if I get COVID so I’m looking for booster appointments this week.

The moderna booster is being studied and there should be an announcement in a few eeeks.

Yes op this group includes teachers. It pretty much includes anyone who feels their job is Covid risky. The individual gets to decide based on their own risk. It’s a “may” not a “should” if you are under fifty.

I was literally coming on here to ask about teachers getting a Pfizer booster- apparently Joe Biden named teachers as "front line workers" in his remarks yesterday.

I teach preschool, got my second Pfizer shot in late March 2021; I will gladly get a third booster, but just wondering/curious what other teachers are thinking/doing re timing, etc.

I watched the committee meeting about this. Basically the members were all over the place on this one. If your goal is only to prevent hospitalization and death, your two doses probably still do that at this point. But if you’d also rather not get mild or moderate Covid, which can still have long term side effects, or if you want to have a higher chance of not getting infected and passing it along to someone else, then get a third dose.

The main reasons people argued against opening it for everyone were:

-Logistical - hard to give out that many shots
- We should focus on unvaccinated (other members spoke up and said, we can do both - this is not either or

A lot of the committee members wanted it to be universal. So basically they split the baby and made it so people can decide for themselves.
