Teachers - Covid Booster

I teach preschool, got my second Pfizer shot in late March 2021; I will gladly get a third booster, but just wondering/curious what other teachers are thinking/doing re timing, etc.

DW and I are both 50 and teach ES grades. We both received our second dose the third week of February. Our schools have had only a handful of student cases and no spread so we are also wondering about timing the third dose.

I teach Head Start in Mcps, had my second dose last week of February. We had a lot of kids out last week, parents aren’t forthcoming about the reasons for absences but one child did get tested (negative, thank goodness).
I know other teachers who got vaccinated in February and have gotten covid since school started. I made my booster appointment at cvs for this week. I have too many other things to worry about at school, if I can move this worry to a back corner I’m happy to do so.

It's ridiculously easy to get a vaccine right now, I chose Safeway because it was the closest pharmacy to my house. The whole process took 10 minutes.

Did it cost anything?

No and they never asked for my insurance card.

Another reason for not recommending a booster for everyone is that the risks of an adverse reaction to the booster shot begin to outweigh the benefit of preventing moderate disease in younger people with less exposure and less fading of protection. In particular, the risk of myocarditis in young men (which is very low) is higher than the risk of Covid problems if this population caught Covid while vaccinated.

I think that was based on a discredited Canadian study?

They thought the risk of myocarditis after vaccination with COVID was 1 out of 1000 but it was a mathematical error and the true risk was 1 out of 25,000.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/covid-19-vaccine-study-error-anti-vaxxers-1.6188806

The risk to young men of health problems if they get COVID is low, but not lower that 1 out of 25,000.

Thanks. I'm looking at CVS now and going through their appointment scheduling intake form. I have Kaiser Permanente, so I'm not sure if I should check "I have only non-Medicare insurance". I don't think they can bill KP for the vaccination.

For CVS I had to fill out the appointment form and gave my insurance info (CareFirst). I do not know what they do with Kaiser. Maybe Safeway just lets you walk in and get the shot without any insurance info. I had my 2nd shot in early February and got my "my booster" Saturday morning. No side effectd for me, not even a sore arm. Felt fairly comfortable with the two I had, but I was glad to see I could get a third shot (over 50 but under 65) with type I diabetes. A bit more piece of mind when going into the classroom.

Thanks. I’ll have to look into this more. I could enter my Kaiser info, but I don’t want to make an appointment and then get turned away. My DS in college went in for a flu shot, but they said KP wasn’t insurance and turned him away. Right now KP is saying they will contact us when they are ready, but I figured if I could go to a place like CVS earlier I would.

MCPS educator here- just got my pfizer booster yesterday and am dealing with the minor side effects today (diarrea, nauseau, sore arm). The teachers, kids, and other mcps employees seem to be contracting covid at a noticeable rate where i work (I am itinerant...so visit lots of different schools/classes). Teachers are having breakthrough cases. I have a higher risk profile due to some medical issues and would like to feel as protected as possible.

Isn’t pretty much everybody, really? There’s no supply issue. If you have any myriad of reasons why you’re eligible, I doubt they ask or push back.

Yes. I work at a university that doesn’t require vaccinations and my doctor specifically told me to get the third shot.

Biden’s DW is a college prof. I’m sure he includes her.

Anonymous wrote:Teachers who got Pfizer are. Teachers who got Moderna are left hanging or have to get an off label third dose.

But most studies show that Moderna's initial dose was more protective, so don't worry for a couple of more months.

Just fill it in accurately and let them deal with the billing. They get reimbursed from insurance when they can, but administer it to all.
