ParentVUE, Synergy, My MCPS Classroom, Canvas…Are there shortcuts?

For my middle schooler, I just want to check

1) what assignments are due in the next few days

2) has everything that that was already/is now due been turned in

What is the easiest way to do this? My kid says there is no easy way to see this information at a glance. I’m hoping that’s not true.

In Canvas there is a to do list. You can also look at the calendar. Sign in as your child.

And get the app so you can stay logged in and easily access when you need to.

Why doesn’t MCPS give parents their own Canvas login? The way I have to go in is first through Synergy then use the resource tab in Synergy to get to Canvas. The phone app for Canvas won’t let me login so I can’t use it.

Everything was easier with Edline. Synergy is never current and Canvas is difficult to access.

Forget all the Canvas notifications that are unreadable unless both Synergy and Canvas is open on your computer at the same time.

I have the StudentVue app for my 8th grader and just leave it logged in on my phone (he has special needs and needs more than average support). I then can easily see his To Do list to guide him.

I also have the ParentVue app so that I can see grades for my other child and keep track of her. She needs very mild support, though.

Note that this year not all teachers are posting assignments on Canvas like they did last year.

OP. When I use the ParentVUE app, I’m unable to access My MCPS Classroom because I get an error message that says I need to login to ParentVUE first…but I am already logged in. I have to skip the app and login to ParentVUE via the web in order to access My MCPS Classroom. Which one of these things is known as Canvas???

I don’t like logging in as my kid because: 1) if I accidentally click the wrong thing it may looks as if I have submitted an assignment when I was just trying to see if it was done: and 2) I’ve heard mcps has weird software that allows them to see other things on your computer when you are logged into an mcps account. Especially if you use Google chrome for other things, it can synth to your kids mcps account.

IME, there’s no easy way because each teacher uses a different thing, and some platforms (eg studysycnh) don’t post on canvas and are slow to synch to parentvue. At BtS night each teacher usually tells the way to track assignments for their class but usually the assignments or the modules link on canvas is the best way. I also always check parentvue grades because those are the grades of record. But just be warned that parentvue often has incorrect grades that are auto-loaded from canvas and then the teacher has to manually correct them.

Canvas is my Mcps classroom.
There’s a known glitch with logging in thru the app. I only do it on my computer.

Also the calendar is not always helpful because no every teacher uses it.

For special needs students - an assignment might look like one step on the Canvas calendar but in reality be three different assignments (all due on the same day).

I thought MCPS was going to make changes this year. Synergy is a crap. It can take weeks for teachers to sync Synergy with Canvas. By that point, a child that appears to have an A is failing when 10 assignments are finally uploaded.

MCPS also doesn’t want parents to see that 50% is still the default grade even when a child didn’t do an assignment or the failed quiz grades that turn into 100%. Comparing Synergy with Canvas definitely shows how much grade inflation is still occurring.

I HATE IT ALL.

I need to remind myself whenever I get those tedious Canvas emails that public school is paid with taxes - I don't pay extra tuition for it. That public school provides free meals and Chromebooks. That public school offers my child with special needs pretty great accommodations and resources. That public school has magnets and special programs.

But oh, how I hate all their platforms.

Hmm. The answer I got from my child’s Assistant Principal is that MCPS doesn’t want parents to look at Canvas. Parents should only be looking at Synergy. My school will not give me my own parental login for Canvas.
