My student is trying to fill out the forms to self-report their grades (some colleges, like VA Tech and Pitt, prefer this to a transcript). Grades need to be entered in two places -- the Common App and the SRAR -- given the schools they have chosen to apply to. Does anyone know how APS middle school Intensified Algebra 1, Intensified Geometry, and Intensified Spanish 1 should be categorized on the SRAR and in the courses and grades section of the Common App? The grades are on the HS transcript. Are they "honors" or "accelerated" or "advanced" or something else? Also, does anyone know if these grades should be reported on the Common App at all? There isn't a field for "Grade 7" or "Grade 8" but there is a field for the last year in which they were in middle school (2017-2018). Maybe this field is intended to be used only by students who took more time to complete HS or something? (Already asked guidance counselor for advice but didn't get an answer; they seem overwhelmed.) |
Wtf ![]() Do they verify the grades on transcripts?? This seems crazy. |
I think a transcript is sent at the end of the year. Honestly, I totally agree with wtf. We wonder why our teens are struggling? This process is crazy. The common app is really just a dashboard and each school does it their own way. So. Many. Essays. And so many stupid ways to trip up, like forgetting to fill out a google form or whatever to have a counselor send transcripts (for the schools that want them) by the RD/EA/ED deadline. There is a special place in hell for the folks who came up with this insane process. And it is really hard to predict where you will and won't get in, so more apps have to get submitted than used to be the case. Sigh. |
Don’t list ANY middle school classes. |
I don't think that's right. Certain middle school classes show up on the high school transcript and should be reported in the SRAR. These are classes that can be taken in high school (like geometry). I think the right answer is Advanced? |
Maybe honors? |
m Intensified classes really should not be listed as honors classes. They don’t count for anything extra, except for parents who feel better that their kids are “special.” Signed a parent who kid insisted on taking a bunch of intensified classes despite my objections. Only AP, DE and IB classes should be listed as honors. |
Actually, the SRAR allows for AP classes to be called "AP" so they would not be honors. Same for IB, pretty sure. |
Intensified is APS version of honors. There’s regular, intensified, and AP. Intensified = honors. That you don’t get a quality point from them is a separate issue which is evident in the GPA. Each county varies in that regard. APS only gives extra points for AP. intensified still shows you are taking on a challenge which is why it’s important to note. |
And yes count HS credit courses if taken in middle school. |
Yes of course when you are accepted they verify your grade. Same with SATs at a lot of schools. Obviously there is no incentive to lie because if you do your admission will be rescinded. . It’s no big deal and took my kids no time at all. |
Ok, so consensus is intensified algebra and intensified geometry in APS is honors (and not advanced or accelerated)? |
ASK THE COUNSELOR |
Learn to read. |
I can read. But if you don’t get an answer have your kid go and ask in person or call the head of counseling. Hundreds of kids use the common app and I’m sure this is a very common question which they have the most expertise in answering. Not an anonymous forum. |
