HYDE-ADDISON WAITLIST

Anonymous
Our daughter is now number 8 on the waiting list for PK4 at Hyde-Addison Elementary School. The waitlist seems to be dropping faster than others. Does anyone know why? If anyone has children enrolled at the school or specifically in PK4 can someone let me know how are you liking it so far? Would love to get any feedback on the overall school and program.

Thank you so much in advance!

HA has always had a lot of OOB students because of their location and gone deeper into their waitlists. More so after they moved to a swing space and IB families didn't want the commute. It's a great school, a rare chance to get into a Wilson feeder from the early grades. If you can swing the commute (we can't for 7 years), then I'd jump on the chance.

Yes the issue is that we would be coming from the Petworth area so the commute would definitely be hard but not sure if its a stupid choice to pass this up if she actually got in.

Parents do a lot for their children. An inconvenient commute is no different. Hyde may be worth a drive. DC is only so big so find the best routes to deal with rush hour traffic.

Parents take long commutes to get their kids to some of the best private schools in the area. Parents take long commutes to work.

To get to Hyde from Petworth, go through Rock Creek Park. Hyde and your child are worth it. It’s like going to Georgetown University that is up the street.

We have driven from Petworth to Mann for 10 years. So worth it. Older child went to Hardy and is now at Wilson. Do the commute. I would caution that HA may be a bit more tricky commute-wise because those side streets in Gtown get jammed, particularly during the afternoon. But a good school and prospect for access to a good middle and high school is worth it. Good luck.

Thanks so much for all the feedback! Sounds like the commute is worth it. If there are any Hyde-Addison families that live in the Petworth area I would love to hear from you and also get your thoughts/feedback. Thanks in advance!

How is the commute? Do you do before or aftercare? How has your experience been with the school? If we got a spot it would be for prek4

Are there any carpool arrangements set up between Petworth families?

Can anyone clarify why the waitlist moves so much more in lower elementary than upper? Usually it’s the reverse.

Yes i was wondering why the Pre-K4 waitlist is moving so quickly. Yesterday my daughter was 8 and now she's 5 today. Not sure if I'm missing something....

We don't do before or aftercare and the commute is about 20-25 minutes depending on which route. We've been taking the Parkway this year and it's been super easy. Usually make it door to door in 18-22 minutes. I think there's a big difference on when you hit the Parkway though. We leave our house right around 8:05am.

I'm surprised to hear this because friends I know who had sibling preference were unable to get into PK (the past 2-3 years) the first time they were eligible.

I live around Petworth and tested the commute pre-pandemic. It was 45-50 minutes leaving between 7:45-8:15. I’m sure that’s way different now, but we decided the quality of life compromise in such a long commute wasn’t worth the difference from our neighborhood school for lower elementary. We’ll reevaluate in a few years, but I wanted to offer the alternate perspective. Though I will say having the high school pathway issue resolved is a huge peace of mind.
