Did your large baby end up a large kid?

Anonymous
People always think my 19 month old is much older than he is. Which can be difficult because he obviously acts like a baby. And I am worried about flying with him because he can’t wear a mask. DS is 36” tall and 34 pounds. He wears 3-4T clothes and size 8T shoes. So far he has grown every doctors visit. My large girl babies slowed down in weight after they started walking but kept growing taller.

What are your stats? DH’s?

Seems most predicative, in my experience.

No. My son was 20 lbs by 12 weeks (10 at birth) and 32 lbs by 12 mos. I just made cream instead of breastmilk, all of my babies were like this. He is thin now (12) and will be tall like his Dad

He should continue to grow for every drs visit for quite some time.

No. My DS was over the 99th percentile for height through his 2 year appointment. Now he is 42nd percentile for height at 11. DH and I are both taller than average but not really tall so we did not expect him to stay huge nor did we expect him to drop to below average. DD was 75th at 2 and is also now around the 40th.

Op here - wow that is a precipitous drop off in percentiles. My oldest daughter was 99% in height until 2 as well but now at 6 is in the 75%. Which is more in line with that I assume DS will be like.

Op here - I am 5’7” and -DH is 5’10”. However we have tall genes in our family. My brother is 6’2” and DH has uncles 6’2+

My sin was a large and long baby but dropped to about 30% by 3, which puts him in line with his Dad's and my height.

On the other hand my sister was a big tall baby and the doctors kept saying she'd stop and she never did. She's 6' (an inch taller than my Dad and a foot taller than my mom).

My son is 14, 5’ 11” and thin now, he was 10 pounds. My daughter was almost 10 pounds but is 5’4” and very thin, small-boned. He was always tall but didn’t look older than he was. She was usually right in the middle for height.

I have some nieces and nephews that were 11 and 12 pounds at birth but are thin and average height as adults.

My son was about 9 and a half pounds at birth, weighed 20 pounds by his four month appointment and was just a generally big toddler. At 13, He’s pretty normal weight now, and medium-tall. He is a solid kid that eats a fair amount—not fat but just feels solid.

My older kid was above the 95th percentile in height and weight as an infant. By elementary school, she had dropped to around the 25th percentile in both. She’s now 17, and has leveled off at around the 75th Percentile for weight and 50th Percentile for height.

Our daughter went to kindergarten in size 4 T clothing, toddler clothes! Remained small throughout elementary and middle school. The doctors did bone scans as we contemplated growth hormone. She grew throughout college and is now five ten, taller than hersister. In my family we are late bloomers and grow until we are twenty or so.

My huge baby (9.5 lbs, 23.5 in) was a large kid - in the 90s for height his whole childhood. Weight was usually in the 50-60% range. He's now a tallish (6'1"), lanky young man of 18.

We're not especially tall people - I'm 5'7" and my husband is 5'8". The tallest relatives I can think of (other than some cousins who get their height from their dad who isn't related to us) are 5'10". No idea how he got to be over 6'.

My kids were both 10lb babies. I was also a 10lb baby who ended up 5'8". DH is 6'5". My kids are still in elementary but are really tall, just like we were. People think they're older than they are, but I don't know that it messes with perceptions of behavior relative to their actual ages. I always had a concern of that, but I don't think it comes up much.
