maternity clothes - sizing

Anonymous
I haven't bought any maternity clothes yet, but was wondering if I can buy stuff already (looking out for good sales online . But, I don't know how the sizing works. If you're a size 4 now (I'm 2 months pregnant), will you continue to be a size 4 in maternity wear? Or can you really not tell till you start putting on weight and try stuff on?

Don't buy too much. I was a size 2/4 pre-pregnancy and was into the medium pregnancy clothes pretty quick, and by the end, actually had a least 1 large pregnancy suit jacket. In pants, I was out of my 4 maternity gap slacks in a flash. I packed on 42 pounds (and I'm short). It wasn't pretty.

i'm 5 mos pregnant and am fitting into my original size (i was also a 2/4) in maternity clothes. with the styles nowadays, i'm actually getting away with only wearing maternity pants and wearing empire waist and/or tunic tops in my regular size. i have maternity jeans that are one size bigger. most moms tell me that they would go a size or two up by the end of the pregnancy, so if you're taking advantage of the sales, i'd say you can buy in your size for a good part of your pregnancy, but for the last month or two, you should look for a size up. will that be the fall?

Pre-pregnancy size 2 or 4 depending on the brand, same size in maternity clothes. I bought some secret belly jeans and the sales woman pressured me to size up from my normal size and I always feel like they are falling down, definitely should have stuck to my size. Maternity pants have been a must, but for tops I have mostly just sized up in regular clothes, buying things that are supposed to be xtra long on not pregnant people. I am 31 weeks now and have put on about 25 pounds, but it is all belly & boob.

PP here. And my belly has room to grow in all of my pants so I don't see having to buy anything larger.

I was a size 2 petite pre-pregnancy, bought gap size 4 pants about a month and a half ago and they are already tight. I've put on 20 pounds at 27 weeks. I have to go shopping again as I have three months to go. I'm wishing I'd bought a couple of size 6 pants. The xs and s shirts are still fine, but I'm putting on most of the weight on my belly, thighs and butt.

15:13 PP here. After reading the last post I am thinking that perhaps your sizing will depend on how you usually put on weight. When I put on weight (both baby weight & just plain weight), my boobs get huge and I put on a thin layer of flab everywhere else.

PPs who have found they had to size up in pants, do you normally first gain wieght on your lower body? I would guess that the key to buying maternity clothes early is knowing where you are prone to packing on the weight.

pp 15:39 here, yes, I usually put on weight on my butt and thighs, I rarely pack any on my upper body.

I am at the very end of my pregnancy. I was a 4 or a 6 pre-pregnancy. The cut of the pants also makes a difference. I have two pairs of H & M maternity pants that I bought size 6 for and they have been too small for most of the third trimester. Because most of the weight I gained (40+ lbs) was in my top part, tops needed to be even larger than normal. I actually really liked Old Navy maternity clothing because it was comfy, really inexpensive and I didn't really have to worry about things being sized too small. I spent like 20$ and got 4 shirts and two pairs of pants. Oh and at the end your belly can be really big so unless your shirt is long enough, underbelly cut pants can show off your belly to everyone

yah..I'd have to agree with everyone. I barely made it into most size 0's pre-preg. My boobs have gone from a small B to a D and my entire mid-section (belly, thighs, butt) have exploded.

I've been shocked to wear mediums, but it's what I need.

PP (previous size 0), how long is this after delivery?

I'm a 0 too right now and pretty petite so no idea what to expect!

I was a 0 petite pre-pregnancy. Now at 28 weeks pregnant, I'm still wearing x-small maternity clothes and I've had luck with size 0s and 1s in maternity pants from Gap and Ann Taylor. (Both are available online- although Ann Taylor doesn't offer petite maternity clothes, so I had to get the pants shortened.)

Not sure if I'll need bigger clothes for the end of the pregnancy, but as long as most of my weight gain is in my belly, I've been able to just wear the pants lower on my waist as I get bigger.

Poor thing. (I am not being snarky, but jealous. I believe I was your size when I was 7 years old.)

It's ok, everybody is different. And everything has two sides, being very small myself and not particularly strong, I'm going to have a tough time carrying a baby around (those carrier things are heavy!)

Thanks for the perspective. You are right. How about this. . .I will help you carry your baby gear if you help me get rid of the pounds I am carrying. If only it was that easy.
