Maryland ODP Tryouts

Anonymous
Any observations/comments from today's tryouts? Other than the ridiculously long drive to Belair? (Though it was a gorgeous evening) DS is first time trying out at U14. Trying to figure out how all this works. I assume all existing ODP pool players have to tryout as well? Seemed like a lot of kids at both sessions for what is probably very few spots.

Why does ODP still exist? Such a money grab

Everyone from last year’s pool has to try out again to get a spot. There are more spots than you think for district odp. There’s no set number. Most kids trying out get a spot. Gets more competitive when you go to state level and much more competitive at region level.

Maryland doesn't have district odp. Last year the u14 age group, they took 50+ kids. Make sure your kid talks alot and is a CM. That's all that coach wants. Oh and if your kid is not big, then most likely you'll be on the second team.

First time my DC tried out, too. They said it was fun and we're hoping for the best!

Just be aware- lots of poaching of kids at ODP - Used to be a nice supplement to club but now most coaches do not recommend it because they end up losing kids to other clubs. If you play for the club of the coach- you have a better chance of making regionals too. Like most things in youth soccer- costs more than you get in return and highly political.

I have never experienced poaching of kids at Maryland ODP. Most kids all know each other because they play against each other.

Can anybody with a kid who has done Maryland ODP in past years comment on whether they usually post the callback lists in the timeframe specified on the MSYSA website? This is my kid's first time trying out and the last open tryout was Sunday.

yes they usually post as they say for the timeframe. You are not notified and need to check the website.

Yes it didn't work because you didn't have the best players on one team when you went to play other states.
