How is AOPS Virtual Academy?

How is AOPS Virtual Academy different from AOPS in person classes?
Anonymous
DC loved it. Didn’t even seem like school.

Local branch is messed-up. Awful Covid response, about as bad as FCPS. 2nd worst communication of all summer programs we experienced.

Not a fan of the text only format. Would not do it again but DC liked it well enough.

There are 3 different AoPS services
AoPS Online is the one with the text only format
AoPS Virtual Academy has classes with an instructor on zoom.
AoPS Academy has in person classes.

If your kids do well with Zoom, then the Virtual Academy classes would be every bit as good as the in person ones.

DS did the virtual with Zoom last year, it was all that was offered. He enjoyed it.

That's not the virtual academy but AoPS online. These are different things.

We just had our first in person RSM session after doing AoPS Online last year. AoPS online was great and we would have continued with AoPS in person if it had been closer. RSM is a 10 minute drive, AoPS is a 40 minute drive.

RSM sent home paper homework for DS to do, AoPS homework last year was all online. We had the Beast Academy books that came with the class but all of the homework was completed online, I get the feeling that is the norm. I would guess that the Beast Academy books are used during the in person classroom instruction more then they were used during the online instruction.

It looks to me like the homework from RSM is more detailed and foundational in nature. DS is in the advanced group but I will say that the work from RSM looks different then the AoPS work that I was looking at last year. It could be that the kids are starting off with a skills review after the summer and the work will look different in a few weeks.
