Any speial requirements fr posting in the Religion forum?

Anonymous
I, Jeff. I am writing to ask for clarification, but not for justification. Happy just to know what your expectations are.

I had assumed (from the way I think you set up the site) that any discussions about religion are supposed to be held in the Religion forum. That would include discussions about whether there is or is not rational reasons for religion to exist, or whether there is no need for rational reasons, or criticisms of specific religions, or whatever. But I could be wrong!

Is there an expectation that one be a believer in order to read and post in the forum? (Of course, harassing or offensive posts would be unacceptable, either way.)

Thanks.

I am pretty much in agreement with you about what should be posted there, with one possible caveat. If an obviously religious poster starts a thread in which he/she clearly wants to discuss things with other religious people, I don't like non-believers to jump in and take over the thread. For example, if someone were to start a topic about whether the Bible forbids homosexuality, it would not be appropriate for someone to post their belief that the Bible is a man-made document that could not by inspired by a mythical God that does not exist. Obviously, that would completely throw the discussion off-topic. In such cases, I think the non-religious posts should be reported so that I can remove them.

Jeff, is this the same poster who wanted a separate forum for Athieism, or required registration for the religion forum.... and whatever else?

Maybe the OP of this thread.

Something seems oddly familiar.

I am the OP of this thread, but not that thread. My first post on that thread was #7, where I indicated I would be asking Jeff:

I suspect that any discussions about religion, including the existence or not thereof, are supposed to be held in the Religion subforum -- or else Jeff will move them here. I will ask.

I rarely if ever post here. I just saw this on Recent Topics. I would suggest that if Jeff doesn't expect only believers to post here -- and if this is offensive or disturbing to you -- that you find a site with different rules, or start your own.

In my follow-up post, I linked back here:

Jeff clarified his expectations for the site in this thread:

I am not going to cut and paste, in order to avoid taking out of context. I also had an embarrassing number of typos.

It's worth reading to note his comments about being willing to assess posts about validity of religion (as being off-topic) when an obvious believer starts a thread about religious answers to a question. I hadn't thought about it; it was helpful to read.

I've never requested or indicated interest in registration for the Religion forum, though I though it would be helpful for Political (I think I was wrong!).

I never wanted a separate forum for atheism. I indicated my understanding that discussions of anything about religion were supposed to happen in that forum, regardless of perspective, and specifically brought attention to Jeff's desire that posts by obvious believers seeking solely religious answers should not be derailed by discussions of atheism.

And I think all of that makes perfect sense.
