summer school-health

Hi-I keep reading on this forum that it's good idea for kids to finish the high school health requirement over the summer and leave room for more substantive classes. In what summer should the child do this ideally (the summer before 9th grade)?

How does one sign up and is it difficult to get a slot?

Registration opens on April 3rd. You can check with your school counselor.

Kids often want to take jobs or do internship or pre-college type programs as they get older, so the summer before 9th kind of makes sense, if they can swing it.

But the requirement is two semesters of Health, so they could also split it up between two different years, if they don’t want to spend an entire summer on a huge volume of busy work.

Also, there’s an online-only evening option during the school year, if they’re not taking classes or doing extracurricular activities that will tie up a ton of their evening hours.

Can you take one semester of high school health before 8th grade? Doing both semesters in one summer seems…painful

Yes, less painful. We did one summer before 8th, then the next summer as they did not offer b yet.

It says rising 9th graders are the first year that can take Health.

The website says to reach out to counselor for registration information. Has anyone gotten a response from their child’s counselor? I am curious if parents are able to register (as in the past) or if counselors are doing it this year. (Yes, I reached out to the counselor but I haven’t gotten a response, which is typical of them.)

I reached out to my kid’s counselor this week and they responded that they didn’t yet have information and to check back on or after the 3rd.

I'm planning to have DC take all health online as a rising 9th, chemistry as a rising 10th, and technology as a rising 11th. DC is artsy and won't have room for multiple arts electives without summer work. DC, of course, doesn't know all of this yet!

People here always talk about not having enough time in the schedule for electives but we never had an issue. My DD is a senior and had enough credits to go half day and take an elective. And she always had Room for electives. We never did summer school and neither did anyone we k ew unless they needed credit recovery.

My DC got the online registration/interest form from the counselor and submitted. It doesn’t include payment so I assume there will be a later step for payment. The counselor can’t process the forms until reg opens next week.

They send the payment much later. They have online and in-person health ed in the summer. Its weird you cannot pay at sign up.
